Thoughts
The Carolina Hurricanes have announced the signing of forward Jeremy Welsh to a one-year entry level contract. Welsh was one of the more coveted college free-agents and the Hurricanes management identified him as their top target of all college free-agents. He will be joining the Hurricanes for their next game which will actually cause his contract to expire this summer, but the Canes will surly re-sign him to a longer deal when the opportunity presents itself.

Jeremy Welsh has developed into quite the hockey player through his three year career at Union College. His great size (6'3 and 210 pounds) has been the foundation for his tremendous success. Through hard work, he has been able to perfect the use of his size which has culminated into a great offensive game. He is able to stay strong on the puck and maintain puck possession in very tight situations. Because of that, he has the ability to get himself to open ice where he is able to either utilize his above-average shot or dish it out to an available teammate. He also isn't afraid to battle in the corners or take beatings in front of the net, which happens to be an area of the ice that he is so effective. He does a good job creating screens, but has the skill level to either deflect a shot or bang home a rebound. The one thing that Welsh had been criticized for in the past was his play in his own end, but after spending the 2011 off-season improving on that aspect of his game, he came into this past season with a decent two-way dimension in his repertoire. Along with his improved defensive play, he worked on his face-off taking ability as well. It has paid dividends for Welsh as he was extremely successful in the face-off circle with a team leading 64% of his draws won. Throughout his career Welsh has done well at identifying his weaknesses and being able to make them a positive through hard work and determination.

His upside is actually pretty large in my opinion, and he can step right into the NHL without a problem. I am very excited to see his performance in his NHL debut tomorrow night against the Panthers.
