PA Parenteau 2010-11 SEASON REVIEW:

PA Parenteau
Date of birth: March 24, 1983 (2010-11 Season Age: 27/28)
Place of birth: Hull, Que, Canada
Height: 6'0
Weight: 198
Shooting Hand: Right
Full (25+ games) NHL Season: 1st Full NHL Season
Drafted: Ducks In The 9th Round (264th Overall) Of The 2001 Draft
Acquired: Signed As A Free Agent By The Isles In 2010

2010-11 Season Stats
:

New York Islanders  NHL:  Games Played: 81  Goals: 20  Assists: 33  Points: 53  PIMs: 46  +/-: -8

Short-Term Status:
The Islanders gave him a one-year extension, and he will most likely remain in his spot on the top two lines. I think he might get less ice-time than last season, but he will still be a player that gets some power play time and top-six minutes.

Long-Term Status:
Even though he put up a lot of points last season, I truly don't see him being an Islander past this upcoming year. He seems like a place holder until the young guys are ready to step up. I expect him to be moved by the deadline if the team is struggling.

Review:
This season was Parenteau's first real opportunity in the NHL, and he was able to prove that he was an NHL caliber player. His offensive instincts were a big asset and helped him earn a lot of power play time. Once he started to receive a considerable amount of ice time of the PP, he really found his niche. He was second on the team in power play points with 20, and 9 of his 20 goals (45%) were also on the power play. Now you cannot argue with his 53 points (t-2nd on team) and 33 assists (2nd on team), but his play in the offensive zone in even strength situations was inconsistent. His vision was useful as it helped him distribute the puck to JT and Moulson, but he would frequently over handle it which led to many turnovers, as shown by his 54 give aways which placed him with the 2nd most of any Islander. In his own zone and the neutral zone, he was basically useless. He looked lost in the defensive end, and was always slow to back check. Along with that, he was an extremely soft player who would lose almost any board battle he happened to get stuck in. My analysis might seem harsh, but I am pointing out the aspects of his game that he doesn't excel at. Luckily, not every player is expected to be the best at every particular aspect of the game. When the Islanders put PA in situations where he can utilize his offensive skill without having to play parts of the game he is uncomfortable in, he is a useful player. I almost look at him like a "power play specialist". That term is used most commonly when referring to very offensive defensemen who don't contribute much, aside from their power play expertise. That is similar to what PAP provides to the Islanders, but from a forward. When he has lots of space and time, he can do some great offensive things. Once the opposition closes that space down, his effectiveness is down the drain...luckily for him and the Islanders, by having him on the same line as John Tavares, the opponents cannot always close down PA's space because once they do that, Johnny T becomes a huge threat. So basically PA's effective only on the power play or when his line-mate is a big time scoring threat. Thats why he always had to be on JT's line this past season and its also why I don't believe Parenteau will be an Islander in 2012-13 because by that time Nino Niederreiter or Ryan Strome will be ready to take their place as Tavares' winger.

Season Grade (A+ to F-)
: B+
Great year stats-wise, but proved to be a bit of an enigma. He is a liability when he doesn't have room and space, but he seems to be competent enough to stay in the Islanders top-six for at least one more season.

Devils Re-Sign Parise

NJ Devils Finally Get Zach Parise Signed
Devils Press Release:

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Devils have reached an agreement with high-scoring left wing Zach Parise on a one-year contract. In making the announcement late Friday afternoon, Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said the two sides were continuing to work on a multiyear deal. The Devils had filed for arbitration with Parise in June. The hearing had been set for Aug. 3. Parise earned $5 million last season, a year in which he was limited to 13 games and three goals by a knee injury that required surgery. He had been the catalyst of the Devils’ offense the previous four seasons, scoring 146 goals.

PattyB:
This is very interesting news mainly due to the fact that its only a one year deal and following it, he will be eligible for Unrestricted Free Agency. The Devils realize how much he means to their organization, but they seem hesitant to cater to all of Parise's desires. This particular contract was made possible by their trade with the Islanders, but this is only the answer to a small part of the Parise problem the Devils have. It will be interesting to see if the Devils are able to get him signed to a long-term deal, which I believe they will ultimately be able to do.

NEWS AND NOTES FOR JULY 29th

JULY 29th: NEWS & NOTES

Ray Emery Invited to Blackhawks Camp
Patty B: This is very interesting, and I was not expecting the Blackhawks to be a team interested in Emery. I really believed that Alex Salak would be a good back-up for Chicago and if Emery ends up making the team (which he will probably do), Salak will be pushed down to the AHL.

The Avalanche Signed 1st Round Draft Picks, Gabriel Landeskog and Duncan Siemens
Patty B: Landeskog was arguably the most NHL ready of all 2011 draftees so his signing was unsurprising and I expect him to make the Avs out of camp. Siemens getting signed is a tad bit surprising, but I still expect him to be returned to his Junior club once the season starts.

Canucks Re-Sign Jannik Hansen To A 3 Year Deal Which Will Pay Him $1.35 Million Per Season
Patty B: The 25 year old, Jannik Hansen, has developed into a talented depth winger who puts up a respectable amount of points while being very solid defensively. The Canucks were able to get him locked up for the near-future at a very reasonable salary of $1,350,000 per season.

Freddy Sjostrom Signed With Färjestad of the Swedish Elite League
Patty B: Sjostrom has been a very good NHL'er and one of the better bottom-six guys out there, which makes this even more surprising. I really thought, he would be able to find a home in the NHL, but it looks like he couldn't and will now be playing overseas.

Alexei Kovalev Has Signed In The KHL
Patty B: No surprise here really, his game has not been NHL caliber for awhile, but should transfer over to the KHL really well. This is the end to a very good NHL career, as I don't believe he will be returning.

Another Trade In The Works For The Isles

Islanders Nearing a Big Deal?
From Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank:

This is what SNY Point Blank has been told this evening. Another hockey move is on its way. For what it’s worth, we were also told that we’re going to like this one. In our view, it’s the only way spending $3 million on Brian Rolston instead of somebody younger and better makes sense.
Patty B: This is very interesting and if anyone out there is an Islanders fan, I'd advise you to have tweets sent to your phone or have your computer handy because something big is brewing in Islanders country. I have a good feeling about this and I will be making sure I have my phone ready incase I hear anything.

Islanders Acquire Brian Rolston

Trade Details:
The New York Islanders trade Trent Hunter to the New Jersey Devils for Brian Rolston.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Breakdown:

Islanders Acquire
Brian Rolston

Islanders Send:
Trent Hunter
Summary Of Deal From An Islanders Perspective:
The Islanders were a little over $9 million away from the Salary Cap Floor before this move and have been trying to figure out ways to get themselves to the required $48.3 million. They also have been looking for another nice veteran forward, and with this deal they were able to fill that need as well as (almost) solve the salary issues. Rolston, despite being very overpaid (something that the Isles are happy about), is a very solid NHL'er. He brings some leadership to the table that will be needed because of Konopka's departure, and has a skill-set that is ideal for a re-building team like the Isles. That skill-set is attractive mainly due to the fact that it makes him an extremely versatile hockey player. He has an impressive shot and can be a very effective player on the power play. Along with his power play abilities, he is also a superb penalty killer. That ability to play in all situations and at all forward positions (I forgot to mention that...he can play center, left wing, right wing...any forward position), makes him a player that will be more valuable than some seem to realize. Along with his skills, what I like about him too, is the fact that he wants to play here. He has a NTC, yet decided that the Isles were a team he would want to play for. He said after the trade that the Isles are a young, up-and-coming club and he would love to be apart of it. Its very important that he approached the move with that mentality as I believe he will become a big influence in the room. I also believe he will be a great line-mate for Josh Bailey, as they're style's seem to complement each other. Believe it or not, this is also a big plus because the Isles were able to dump Trent Hunter. Hunter is a player that I grew up watching and I really enjoyed seeing him grow and develop in an Islanders sweater, but he has dwindled down to only a shell of his former self in the past few years. Despite being just 31 years old, his body has deteriorated tremendously and injuries kept him to only 17 games this past season. His skating has been a problem throughout his entire NHL career, but in the past two seasons in particular its been worse than any NHL'er I have ever seen. It looks like he is skating in quicksand...literally, and that bad skating doesn't fit in with the Isles up-beat tempo which is another reason why Rolston will fit in well, as his quick skating is something that complements the Islanders current style of play. Trent Hunter at this point, was just eating up a spot in the Isles line-up and because he was signed to a 5-year deal after his solid season in 2007-08, he still had this year and next year on his contract. That was something the Isles were not planning to deal with, so the fact that they were able to move him for a guy that only has one-year left on his contract as well as provide a lot more to the team is very impressive. Even though I love this deal for the Islanders, its pretty even for both sides considering, it gave the Devils some much needed cap space and now they are most likely going to be able to sign Zach Parise. But really though, that should not even be a concern for the Isles as I believe getting rid of Trent Hunter and gaining Brian Rolston is a move thats a clear plus from the Isles side. Now looking at the Islanders off-season thus far, it should be noted that the mind-set seems to be to "upgrade". They have upgraded Konopka with Reasoner, Hunter with Rolston, and they continue to try and find a player via trade to upgrade Radek Martinek.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What The Islanders Gain In Adding Brian Rolston:
-Good power play point man
-Terrific penalty killer
-Two-way winger
-Big salary which gets them closer to floor, while only having one year left on deal while Hunter had two left.
-Established Leader

What The Islanders Lose In Trading Trent Hunter:

-Long Tenured Islander
-When he's healthy, he can provide a gritty, board presence
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Thoughts:
Good deal for the Islanders who just added a nice 3rd liner that has a ton of intangibles. Also according to Chris Botta this deal is a pre-cursor to another trade the Islanders are working on so keep an eye out.

NEWS AND NOTES FOR JULY 27th

JULY 27th: NEWS & NOTES

Canucks Sign Byron Bitz To A One-Year Deal:
The Canucks have signed gritty forward, Byron Bitz to a one-year, two-way contract. At the NHL level he will be making $700,000 per year and at the AHL level he will earn $105,000. I love this signing for the Nucks and I believe he will fit in perfectly in their bottom-six forward group. His hard hitting, gritty style will be appreciated on their club and will give them yet another physical, agitating type player to put up against opponents.

Predators Sign Craig Smith To A Two-Year Entry Level Contract:
The Preds signed Craig Smith to an ELC and I would expect Smith to be a real serious candidate to make the Predators team out of camp. He is ready for the pros.

Pens Sign Scott Harrington To An Entry Level Contract:
The Penguins signed their recent second round selection, Scott Harrington to an ELC. I would imagine that Harrington will remain in the OHL for the next two years.

Connor Murphy, John Gibson and Reid Boucher to OHL:
All three were expected to play college hockey, and now have decided to opt out of their commitment's to join the OHL. This is very rough news for NCAA hockey, which has become a secondary option in the development of young prospects.

NEWS AND NOTES FOR JULY 25th

JULY 25th: NEWS & NOTES

Rangers Re-Sign Eminger:
To round out their defense, the NY Rangers have re-signed Steve Eminger to a one-year contract. He will be payed around $800,000 which is almost half his 2010-11 salary of $1,500,000. I am surprised they decided to bring him back, but I guess they just see it as adding a cheap bottom-pairing defenseman who at times can step his game up a bit.

Kris Draper Retiring:
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that tomorrow Kris Draper and the Detroit Red Wings will announce that Draper will be hanging up the skates after a great 20 year NHL career. Throughout his time in the league, he developed into one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL and because of that he won the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the Best Defensive Forward in the NHL back in the 2003-04 season. Along with that, he won the much more important trophy aka. the Stanley Cup, an impressive four times with the Red Wings.

Brad Marchand Nearing Extension With Bruins:
One of the many heroes to come out of the Stanley Cup winning, playoff campaign of the Boston Bruins, was Brad Marchand and it looks as though he will be staying with Boston for a long amount of time. Supposedly the deal is in the four-year range and he will be earning around $3 million per season.

Jassen Cullimore Signs In Germany:
Cullimore did a nice job with the Blackhawks last season, as a veteran depth defenseman, but it looks like at the age of 38 his NHL career might be over as he has signed in Germany with Iserlohn.

Bud Holloway Signs In Sweden:
Bud Holloway at age 23, put up some nice numbers with Manchester of the AHL with 28 goals and 33 assists for 61 points. I was very impressed with him and I thought he might be able to push for an NHL job soon, which is why I was all the more surprised when I heard that he has signed in the Swedish Elite League with SkellefteÃ¥. Now, it doesn't mean he has given up on the NHL as he only signed a one-year deal over there and he is still quite young, but I still find it troubling.

Jamie Oleksiak Will Play For Saginaw:
It looks as though Jamie Oleksiak, who was selected fourteenth overall in this past draft by the Stars, will leave Northeastern University to go play in the OHL for the Saginaw Spirit. I don't know about you, but I am VERY interested to see what this jump does for his development as I really think college would have been the best path for him

Isles Add More Depth

Isles Sign Tim Wallace To A One-Year, 2-Way Deal
Official Team Press Release
"The New York Islanders announced today that Tim Wallace has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way (AHL/NHL) contract. Wallace, 26, scored 37 points (20 goals, 17 assists) in 62 regular season games last season to finish fifth in scoring on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He also saw NHL action for the third consecutive season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, playing in seven games. In 24 career NHL games, all with Pittsburgh, Wallace recorded two assists and 12 penalty minutes. The Anchorage, AK, native also totaled 75 goals and 62 assists in 304 career regular season games, along with four goals and 13 assists in 55 Calder Cup Playoff games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Prior to playing professionally, Wallace enjoyed a four-year career at the University of Notre Dame, where he totaled of 59 points (25 goals, 34 assists) in 153 games. The 6’1”, 206-pound forward was a member of the United States Junior National Team of the United States Hockey League in 2001-02 and played for the United States National Under-18 Team of the North American Hockey League in 2000-01."
PattyB Thoughts:
People seem to brush aside depth signings like this, but I actually really like this particular move. Wallace plays a good, physical style that really positively impacts his team both on the ice and in the locker room. That physicality (fights, hits, etc..) is a big part of his game, but what makes him even more attractive is the fact that he can play that style and still contribute offensively. Had he played on the Sound Tigers last season, he would have been second on the team in goals and fifth on the team in points. It should also be noted that in 2009-10, he had 27 goals on the year with the Baby Penguins which led the team. That ability to score a few goals, along with his impressive work ethic and hard nosed style, will make Wallace a valuable addition to the Sound Tigers (or possibly Islanders). His leadership will be welcomed to the young Bridgeport club, but I honestly think there is at least some chance that he can push for a spot with the Islanders out of camp. If you wanna look for this year's Matt Moulson, or PA Parenteau, in my opinion the most likely candidate would be Wallace.
