Anders Lee 2010-11 SEASON REVIEW:

Anders Lee
Date of birth: July 03, 1990 (2010-11 Season Age: 20)
Place of birth: St.Paul, MN, USA
Height: 6'2
Weight: 209
Shooting Hand: Left
NCAA Season: Freshman
Drafted: New York Islanders in the 6th round (152nd overall) of the 2009 Draft
Acquired: Originally Drafted By The Isles

2010-11 Season Stats:

Notre Dame       CCHA:  GP: 44 G: 24 A: 20 P: 44  PIM: 16

Short-Term Status:
In his first season at Notre Dame he turned into one of their most important players and next season he may be their MOST important player. He will have to perform well on both sides of the puck and will be expected to provide a lot of the team's primary scoring.

Long-Term Status:
I really like Anders Lee and I am hoping he can turn out to be a solid top-six forward for the Islanders down the line. One thing to keep an eye on though, in the future, is the fact that just like Jason Gregoire and Blake Kessel, he played one year in the USHL before going to the NCAA. Which means he would be eligible to use the "Blake Wheeler" loop hole in the CBA that both the players previously mentioned have used.

Review:
Anders Lee is one of my personal favorite prospects the Islanders have. He is an incredible athlete that could have possibly gone pro in football, but decided hockey was his true love. In his first season at Notre Dame, he was one of the best freshmen in college hockey and was a consistent provider for the Fighting Irish, night in and night out. His 44 points through 44 games were the second most of anyone on the team. Surprisingly, Lee is only the 12th rookie in Irish history to record 40 or more points in a season. What also became more evident this year was his impressive goal scoring ability. He had 24 goals which was the highest goal total on the club and 2nd most in the league. But, what I find really amazing is how many of those goals won his team the game. He had 7 game winning goals throughout the season, that clutch ability is rare to find in any hockey player, let alone one that is taking a jump to a much more competitive and challenging league. Along with his impressive offensive zone play, he didn't look bad in his own zone or the neutral zone. He was decent positionally and it shows from his impressive plus/minus of a plus-19. For his impressive effort this season, he was able to win some pretty prestigious honors in the CCHA. He was selected for the 2010-11 All-Rookie Team at the end of the season and was named the CCHA Rookie of the Month on three seperate occasions during the year, along with three stints as the CCHA Rookie of the Week. He also was able to get a spot on the CCHA Second All-Star Team.

Season Grade (A+ to F-)
A
His stats were incredible and he was impressive in every facet of the game. I am very, very pleased with his development and I believe he may be a player to watch down the road. His success this season will be built on going forward and he may very likely dominate with Notre Dame next season.

Berglund Signs 2-Year Extension

Patrik Berglund Signs 2-Year Extension With Blues

Press Release
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Tuesday the club has re-signed forward Patrik Berglund to a two-year contract extension. Berglund will be available to the media and fans in a unique conference web chat format on stlouisblues.com on Wednesday at noon CST. “Patrik took his game to another level this season and followed it up with an outstanding performance in the World Championships,” said Armstrong. “We expect him to be a major component of the Blues and continue to advance in this league.” Berglund, 22, completed his third season with the Blues in 2010-11 setting career highs in games played (81), points (52), goals (22) and assists (30) in addition to leading the club with a career best eight power play goals. The Vasteras, Sweden native also earned the Silver Medal with Team Sweden and was named to the tournament All-Star Team at the 2011 IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. Berglund dressed in nine games and ranked second among all skaters in points (10), goals (8) and plus/minus (+7). The 6’4”, 218-pound forward has appeared in 228 games for the Blues during his three-year NHL career accumulating 125 points including 56 goals and 69 assists. He was originally drafted by the Blues in the first round, 25th overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Fans will be able to watch Berglund's media conference call live on Wednesday at noon at stlouisblues.com. Fan questions for Berglund can be submitted by clicking here and may be asked during Wednesday's conference call.
PattyB Thoughts:
I love this deal for the Blues, Berglund is turning into one heck of a hockey player and at that price, its a great deal. He is going to be key for the Blues next year and for many more in the future.

Canadiens Re-Sign Hal Gill

Hal Gill Sign's A 1-Year Extension With Montreal
According to Bob McKenzie, Hal Gill has agreed to terms on a one-year, $2.25M contract with the Canadiens. This is good news for the Habs as Gill has developed into quite the mentor for young P.K. Subban and in my opinion is vital to Subban's development. Along with that, he is a force defensively and consistently keeps the front of the net clear.

Brock Nelson 2010-11 SEASON REVIEW:

Brock Nelson
Date of birth: October 15, 1991 (2010-11 Season Age: 18/19)
Place of birth: Minneapolis, MN, USA
Height: 6'3
Weight: 205
Shooting Hand: Left
NCAA Season: Freshman
Drafted: New Jersey Islanders in the 1st round (30th overall) of the 2010 Draft
Acquired: Originally Drafted By The Isles

2010-11 Season Stats:

United States            WJC:  GP: 5   G: 0 A: 1   P: 1   PIM: 0
U Of North Dakota       WCHA:  GP: 42 G: 8 A: 13 P: 21  PIM: 27

Short-Term Status:
Heading into his second season at the University of North Dakota, Brock Nelson is going to be expected to be a key contributor on both sides of the puck, but primarily he needs to step up offensively.

Long-Term Status:
He has a huge amount of raw potential and I am confident he will reach most of it. He is a huge center who in my opinion will be a terrific source of secondary scoring in the future, unfortunately its not in the near future as he needs a lot of work refining his game before he can even begin to contemplate signing an Entry Level Contract. Down the line, I expect him to be a premier two-way, big body, 2nd line center.

Contract Status
:
NO SIGNED TO AN NHL CONTRACT

Review:
If hockey runs in the blood as they say, then Brock Nelson is destined for greatness. His Grandfather is Billy Christian, a Minnesota hockey legend who won Gold at the 1960 Olympics, and his uncle is ex-NHL'er Dave Christian, who played a key role on the 1980 USA Olympic 'Miracle on Ice' Gold Medal win at Lake Placid. With that type of family history, you would think the pressure of meeting those expectations would get to Brock Nelson, but as of now he has handled them well. Despite having very limited ice-time at UND  (only because he was a freshman) and getting healthy scratched once or twice, he was able to put up a few points and really displayed a good defensive game that was crucial to the role he was used in (checking forward). That willingness to play a versatile game and adapt to whatever role the coach asked him to be in, really came in handy with Team USA at the WJC. He made the roster by taking a 4th line checking role, and did hell of a job playing a physical, hard-working style game. That hard-working style of play at the WJC's and with UND, earned him more ice-time down the stretch with North Dakota and he took full advantage of it as he finished the last 8 games of the season with 8 points. Unfortunately his season ended a little bit earlier than it should have due to a broken tailbone that he suffered in one of UND's playoff games. As a freshman, its expected that he would have some rough times throughout the year and most of those times happened early on. Once he was able to adapt to the faster pace and different style of play, his performance improved. Of the 2 games of his last 8 that I watched there were a few things that impressed me mightily. His vision and hockey sense are just off the charts, its obvious he has been around the game all his life as he can read a play better than a lot of people playing in the NHL. He also is very good with the puck, so those two characteristics together really make for a dangerous combo. I am very excited about him and I am sure we will see him in the NHL in a few years.

Season Grade (A+ to F-)
: B
His stats weren't great, but the fact that he was able to earn more ice-time as the year went on proves to me that he was working hard enough and impressing enough to earn some more respect from his coach. UND's hockey program is one of the best in the country and to be able to earn more minutes as a freshman is something that should be noted. I also was very happy with his WJC performance, which in my opinion made me realize how willing he is to adapt to different and new situations which for a freshman in college, is an important aspect if he is going to develop the right way.

2010-11 Season Stats:

Bridgeport Sound Tigers       AHL:  GP: 67 G: 7 A: 12 P: 19  PIM: 56

Short-Term Status:
He has one more year left on his current contract so he will be playing for the Sound Tigers next season and will most likely get decent minutes. This upcoming year is extremely important in his career as he will have to get at least 30 points if he wants a new contract.

Long-Term Status:
As of right now, he doesn't have too much NHL potential. Of coarse there is the outside chance he makes it as a bottom-six forward, but most likely he will be minor league depth for most of his career. Personally I would really like to see him make the pros because I love to see guys from Long Island do well in the NHL, so it will be something to keep an eye on next season.

Review:
Tony Romano is one of only a handful of players who were raised on Long Island, but its far from a sure thing that he will be successful enough to reach the level that some other Long Islander's have gotten to (Higgins, Komisarek). The Islanders acquired him back in the 2009 off-season and his first season with the organization was not the best as he bounced between the AHL and ECHL. This season however, he took a permanent role with Bridgeport and although he wasn't outstanding, he was a capable 3rd liner for sure. He has some speed and as he showed in Juniors, he does have some scoring potential. Next season I would keep my eye on him because steadily he has gotten better and better each year and, if he is given the opportunity, he may have the type of season he needs.

Season Grade (A+ to F-)
: C+
He had a solid season, nothing special, but still something positive. He didn't look out of place this season, while last season he did, so its an obvious improvement.

He is a RFA this off-season, but has already signed in Austria for next year. The Islanders, if they wanted to, could send him a qualifying offer. If they did that, he would obviously reject it because he already signed elsewhere but if he ever decided to come back to North America, the Isles would hold his rights.

Long-Term Status:
To be honest, I am not sure. He was solid in the AHL this year and I thought somewhere down the line, he might be an NHL'er in some capacity.

Review:
Rob Hisey has had a very interesting career as he has bounced around to many different leagues and teams. At just 26, he has played in the OHL, UHL, ECHL,  SM-liiga, DEL, Austria league, Elitserien, Germany 3, and the AHL, with a total of 14 different teams. You would think a player that has bounced around that much, would not be too good, but surprisingly he has put up decent numbers where ever he has went. Despite playing well this year, Hisey has already signed in Austria for next season, so he will not be playing in the Islanders organization next year which is a bit of a disappointment. He was surprisingly good for the Sound Tigers as his stats were very impressive. He had the 2nd most assists on the team with 32 and the 2nd most total points as well with 48. His offensive game was outstanding mainly due to his shifty, fast style that enables him to take advantage of the extra room available in the AHL game. I'm interested to see if the Isles qualify him to retain his rights because I think he is a solid top-6 forward in the AHL which can be valuable for a minor league team thats been struggling.

Season Grade (A+ to F-)
: B
I was not expecting much from him, but he was able put up some very impressive numbers. He became one of the Sound Tigers' most important players and was used in many different situations.

Review:
After having decent numbers in the OHL in 06-07 and 07-08, he has been an absolute bust once he moved up to the next level. He has not put up more than 11 points in any of his three season in the AHL. He took a role as a more defensive orientated bottom-six center for the Tigers but still had an abysmal plus/minus this season with a minus-20. He has been decent on the PK in Bridgeport, but his lack of speed has become more and more problematic. Along with his lack of speed, his hockey sense is just non-exsistent and in my opinion for a player to be defensively strong at the higher levels they NEED the defensive awareness and hockey sense to assist them in reading the opposing offense. This season proved to me that Marcinko really does not have an NHL future and his upside is probably where is right now; a bottom-six AHL forward. I would not be surprised to see him sign in Europe during the off-season as I don't believe he will be approached by any NHL teams.

Season Grade (A+ to F-)
: D
He didn't do anything to earn a new contract and will most likely be passed up by the Islanders. Not only did he not bring any offensive game to the table, but his defensive game which supposedly was his "bread and butter", was nothing special.
