CONTRACT: One-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Won the 2010-11 NCAA Championship with Minnesota-Duluth.
-Highest point total of all Minnesota-Duluth defensemen.

Thoughts
The Calgary Flames have signed twenty-three year old, Brady Lamb, to a one-year entry level contract. Lamb, who grew up in Calgary, will report to the Abbotsford Heat (Flames AHL affiliate) on an Amateur Try-Out and then next season his NHL contract will begin.

Brady Lamb plays a very solid two-way game from the back-end. He can move the puck well, and this season was used as the power play quarterback for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He also has an above-average shot that has been a real asset from the point. His offensive game has improved through his four year collegiate career. He has always been a very impressive defenseman in his own-end on the defensive side of the puck. He is built physically, and is more than willing to use that size efficiently. Along with his physical style of defending, he also has a gritty, take-no-garbage mentality. As expected with a good defensive zone defenseman, he see's a lot of penalty kill time. He became one of UMD's best penalty killers with his good shot blocking ability and his knack of getting his stick into the passing lanes. His all-around ability is extremely useful, and has been made even more successful due to his above-average skating. His acceleration has been a big asset in breakouts, and has enabled him to find all possible passing lanes.

Brady Lamb has the talent to be a decent NHL player. He may not be an amazing one, but he has potential and a good current skill level. He may need one season in the American Hockey League, but within three years I fully expect him to reach the NHL full-time.

2011-12 Statistics:

CONTRACT: Two-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Finished all four NCAA seasons.

Thoughts
The Anaheim Ducks have signed Ryan Hegarty to a two-year entry level contract. Earlier this morning, the Syracuse Crunch — Anaheim's AHL Affiliate — signed Hegarty to an Amateur Try-Out for the rest of the season and then next year he will begin his NHL contract. He just completed his senior year at the University of Maine.

Ryan Hegarty plays a very quiet yet effective game. He doesn't have much offensive ability, but he is competent enough to make a decent first pass. Once the play is in the offensive zone though, he looks a lot less comfortable. However, in his own end he is noticeably comfortable and very aware. His defensive zone positioning is fantastic, and he uses his stick to get into the passing lanes. On that side of the puck he has a great skill-set. If he could work on his offensive game, I think he'd be a good second pairing defenseman down the line. A solid comparison would be Andrew MacDonald of the New York Islanders.

He needs a lot of time in the minors before being a legitimate NHL prospect. By the end of his entry level contract, there will be a better handle on where is upside is.

New Jersey Devils Sign David Wohlberg To A Two-Year Entry Level Contract

C. David Wohlberg

2011-12 Statistics:
University of Michigan (NCAA)41 GP | 16 G | 17 A | 33 PTS | 30 PIM

CONTRACT: Two-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Assistant Captain of the 2011-12 University of Michigan Team.
-Named to the 2008-09 NCAA (CCHA) All-Rookie Team.
-Named the 2008-09 NCAA (CCHA) Rookie Of The Year.
-Tied for the most points & goals of all players on the 2011-2012 University of Michigan team.

Thoughts
The New Jersey Devils have signed twenty-one year old center, David Wohlberg to a two-year entry level contract. Wohlberg is coming off of a successful career at the University of Michigan.

David Wohlberg doesn't have any high end talent, but he plays a solid hard-working game. He is always moving his feet and is willing to play a physical style. His versatility will help him earn a bottom-six role at the NHL level. His great speed really allows him to be an effective forechecker and his size makes him a real threat to force some turnovers. His work ethic creates opportunities and should help him end up in the NHL in some capacity.

He will need a little bit of time in the American Hockey League to get acclimated to the pro game. Once he looks comfortable I believe he could jump right to the Devils' bottom-six forward group.

Isles Sign John Grahame

Photo From: LINK

NY Islanders Sign John Grahame For The Rest Of The Season
With Evgeni Nabokov presumably out for the rest of the season and Kevin Poulin needed down in Bridgeport for their playoff run, the Islanders decided to add a veteran netminder to back-up Al Montoya through the final five games of the season. The goaltender they chose to add was thirty-six year old, John Grahame.

After his playing career looked finished, Grahame decided to take an off-ice job this season as a goalie coach for the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL. For a thirty-six year old who last played in the NHL almost five years ago, he surely was not expecting to be signed by an NHL team, but because of some unexpected circumstances he will find himself dressed in an NHL game at least five more times. I don't think he will get to see any actual game play, but if he does it will definitely be something interesting to watch considering he hasn't played at all this season.

The contract is only for the remainder of the season (five games), so he was signed to be just a 'warm body' for the Isles to run out the rest of the year with.

This afternoon he passed his physical, so he will be joining the Islanders roster by tomorrow.

Leafs Sign Spencer Abbott

Maple Leafs Sign Spencer Abbott To A 1-Year Entry Level Contract
Photo From: LINK

LW. Spencer Abbott
Age: 23
Height: 5-10
Weight: 170
Drafted: Undrafted

2011-12 Statistics:
University Of Maine (NCAA)39 GP | 21 G | 41 A | 62 PTS | 34 PIM

CONTRACT: One-Year Entry Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Named to the 2009-10 NCAA (Hockey East) All-Academic Team.
-Named the 2011-12 NCAA (Hockey East) Player Of The Year.
-The 2011-12 NCAA (Hockey East) Scoring Champion.
-Named a finalist for the 2011-12 NCAA "Hobey Baker Award".
-Assistant Captain for the 2011-12 University of Maine Team.

Thoughts
As the Toronto Maple Leafs seem to do every year, they have signed the most sought after undrafted college free agent. This year's big name is Spencer Abbott out of the University of Maine. He will be turning twenty-four in a little over a month which means that the entry level contract will only be for one year. He will report to the Maple Leafs AHL affiliate — the Toronto Marlies — on an Amateur Try-Out, and then next season his contract with the Leafs will begin.

Spencer Abbott had incredible season with the University of Maine, putting up sixty-two points in thirty-nine games. Although he's a bit undersized at 5-10 and 170 pounds, it is a big reason why he is able to play the way he does. One of his most valuable talents is his elusiveness, and if he wasn't the size he is, he'd probably not have that ability. Along with that, he shows a quickness in every move he does on the ice which makes it very hard for defenders to keep up. Then when you factor in his impressive hockey sense and offensive instincts, it makes for a truly dynamic forward. He does a heck of a job reading plays and with his above-average acceleration he is always able to get to where he needs to be. His acceleration opens up a lot of opportunities for him, especially when moving out of his own end. Frequently he will beat out an opposing defenseman for a puck in the neutral zone and come in alone on a breakaway. He has good enough hands to usually finish those types of opportunities. I could see him being a good asset on the penalty kill because when he is at the top of the zone, the point men on the power play will be quite aware of his presence breathing down their necks. Whether or not he is able to translate his NCAA scoring touch to the NHL, he will still be an effective NHLer in some capacity.

Very little risk with this move considering they got a versatile and effective player that could be used in a number of roles. I think he'll take the rest of the AHL season as a time to adjust to the pro-game and then next year he'll be ready to start at the NHL level.

-Named the 2010-11 NCAA (WCHA) Rookie Of The Year.
-Named to the 2011-12 NCAA (WCHA) All-Academic Team.
-Named to the 2011-12 NCAA (WCHA) Second All-Star Team.

Thoughts
The Minnesota Wild announced yesterday that they have signed twenty-year old Jason Zucker to a three-year entry level contract. Zucker, coming off of an impressive sophomore campaign with the University of Denver, will join the Wild's NHL roster immediately with the hope that he'll make his NHL debut tomorrow night. Although I'm sure many Wild fans are excited to see Zucker show what he can do at the highest level, the decision to have him join the NHL roster now means that the first year of his contract will be burnt off.

Since being drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the second round of the 2010 draft, Jason Zucker has been terrific. Zucker is as well-rounded as any prospect in the National Hockey League. He has been praised since his draft year for an impressive two-way game, and an impressive work-ethic. Even though both of those talents are still big pieces of Zucker's game, his offensive skill-set has really developed in his time at the University of Denver. His speed has always been a big asset for him, but with a much improved wrist shot he has become a big threat in odd-man rush situations. Along with a solid shot, he has also begun to see the ice extremely well, which has opened up a playmaking dimension to his game that many scouts didn't see in his earlier years. He can throw around his body, despite his smaller stature, and is always willing to battle in the corners and in front of the net. He just plays the game the way it was meant to be played. Along with all of his on-ice talents, his leadership in the room and on the bench is impeccable. As a three-time World Junior participant  —  where he was captain for one team (2011-12) and won the gold medal for another (2009-10) — he knows how to lead through important games.

Jason Zucker has all the makings of a good NHL'er. His versatility makes him extremely valuable, and opens up many doors for him to find a home in the NHL. Zucker's high work-ethic is endearing to coaches and will surely be a big plus for him going forward. He is definitely one to keep an eye on for Wild fans because I'm sure you guys will enjoy this kid.

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Nick Cousins To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract

Photo From: LINK

C. Nick Cousins
Age: 18
Height: 5-10
Weight: 177
Drafted: Philadelphia Flyers in the 3rd round (68th overall) in 2011.

2011-12 Statistics:
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)65GP | 35 G | 53 A | 88 PTS | 88 PIM

CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Led his team in goals, assists, and points.
-Sixth-most assists in the OHL.

Thoughts
As originally announced by Cousins himself, he and the Philadelphia Flyers have reached an agreement on a three-year entry level contract. He was drafted last summer in the third round by the Flyers, with one of the picks acquired from the Blue Jackets in the Jeff Carter trade. Cousins will report to the Flyers AHL affiliate — the Adirondack Phantoms — on an Amateur Try-Out for the remainder of the season, and then next season the contract will officially begin.

Nick Cousins gets knocked a lot because of his lack of size, but this season he has done a good job at quieting his critics with a productive season on and off the ice. On the ice he has proved that he has the offensive skill-set and two-way ability to be a solid player at both ends of the ice. Off the ice, he has put on twelve pounds to help himself bulk up a bit. Regardless of his actual size, he makes up for it with his hard work and large sized game. He has a very 'Flyer-esque' dimension to his game, that has made him particularly interesting for Flyer fans. His agitating qualities are well known throughout the OHL, and he is willing to take the beating that comes with being a provoker. That side of his game sparks from his competitiveness which really has made him a 'team-first' type player. He wants his team to win, and he tries to make that happen at all costs. It has made him a leader on the ice, because once his teammates see how much he wants to win it pushes them to work a little bit harder.

He will spend next season back in the OHL, but after that he may be able to make a push for a bottom-six role with the Flyers. He does have a solid future in hockey, but it still remains to be seen if he'll be able to handle playing his style against bigger and better players at the pro-level.

Winnipeg Jets Sign Will O'Neill To A Two-Year Entry Level Contract

D. Will O'Neill
Age: 23
Height: 6-1
Weight: 205
Drafted: Atlanta Thrashers (Jets) in the 7th round (210th overall) in 2006.

2011-12 Statistics:
University of Maine (NCAA)40 GP | 3 G | 30 A | 33 PTS | 68 PIM

CONTRACT: Two-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Captain of the 2011-12 University of Maine Team.
-Named to the 2009-10 NCAA (Hockey East) All-Academic Team.
-Second-most assists of all NCAA defensemen during the 11-12 season.

Thoughts
The Winnipeg Jets have announced the signing of Will O'Neill to a two-year entry level contract. Last spring the Thrashers tried to entice O'Neill to turn pro, but once the summer came and the franchise was moved, O'Neill was lost in the shuffle. Regardless, O'Neill was hellbent on staying with the University of Maine for his senior year.

Will O'Neill has been a key player for the University of Maine throughout his four years there. As is the case with most successful players and prospects, O'Neill is known for an impressive work-ethic and intensity, that allows him to get the absolute most out of himself and his teammates. His hockey sense is above average, and he does a good job at making split-second decisions. His biggest asset in his offensive game is his first-pass. He does a good job breaking the puck out, and starting an offensive rush. In his own end, he is always positionally sound, but when he is in one-on-one situations he does tend to struggle.

O'Neill is still pretty raw, but as we all know defenseman tend to take a bit longer to develop. With his work-ethic and hockey sense, he has the foundation that a good defenseman would need. With some time in the AHL to refine his game and develop at his own pace, he could turn out to be a good 2nd or 3rd pairing defenseman. With that said, he could very well end up struggling with the transition to pro-hockey and fail to turn into a player of any value. Next season will be very telling about his future (or lack of one) in the NHL.

Capitals Sign Cameron Schilling To A Two-Year Entry Level Contract

Photo From: LINK

D. Cameron Schilling
Age: 23
Height: 6-2
Weight: 196
Drafted: Undrafted

2011-12 Statistics:
Miami (of Ohio) University (NCAA)39 GP | 1 G | 13 A | 14 PTS | 20 PIM

CONTRACT: Two-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Completed all four years at Miami University.

Thoughts
The Washington Capitals announced yesterday that they have signed college free-agent, Cameron Schilling to a two-year entry level contract. Schilling just completed his senior year at Miami (of Ohio) University. According to Schilling himself, the Capitals have been in-contact with him for quite some time, and have been very forthcoming about their interest in the twenty-three year old. He will join the Hershey Bears (the Capitals AHL affiliate) on an Amateur Try-Out before his contract kicks in next season.

Cameron Schilling has a very solid, two-way game. He is a good skater with above average acceleration which helps him maintain good positioning almost always. He does have some untapped offensive potential, but he is usually pretty hesitant to get involved on the offensive side of the puck as he is more of a defense-first type of defenseman. He is very good in his own end, and he takes pride in that. His good mobility helps him to be more efficient in the defensive-end as he gives himself a good chance to beat opponents to the puck. He is willing to throw his body around a bit, and he has some nastiness in his game as well. All-in-all, he is a solid all-around defenseman.

His upside is not huge, but I believe he is already good enough to be a bottom-pairing defenseman at the NHL level. Unfortunately he probably won't be much better than that, but with some work on his play on the offensive side of the puck, he could be a 2nd pairing defenseman at some point. Next season, I expect him to play in the NHL.

Montreal Canadiens Sign Greg Pateryn To A 2-Year Entry Level Contract

Photo From: LINK

D. Greg Pateryn
Age: 21
Height: 6-3
Weight: 214
Drafted: Toronto Maple Leafs in the 5th round (128th overall) in 2008.

2011-12 Statistics:
University of Michigan (NCAA)41 GP | 2 G | 13 A | 15 PTS | 65 PIM

CONTRACT: Two-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Completed all four years with University of Michigan.
-Assistant Captain for the 2011-12 University of Michigan Team.

Thoughts
The Montreal Canadiens have signed twenty-one year old, Greg Pateryn to a two-year entry level contract. Pateryn is coming off of his senior year at the University of Michigan.

Pateryn was acquired by the Canadiens in the trade that sent Mikhail Grabovski to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Since then Pateryn has developed into a solid defensive-defenseman with the University of Michigan. At 6'3 and 214 pounds, he has the ideal size for an NHL blue-liner, and he uses that size perfectly. He won't be much of a contributor on the offensive side of the puck, but he plays a very physical style that made him one of the most feared defensemen in the CCHA. With that being said, he has a long way to go before being ready for the NHL and honestly he may never be ready. His skating needs a lot of work as it was sub-par for even NCAA standards. If, over time, he can get his skating to be at least average for the NHL level, he could be a good defensive defenseman.

This off-season is huge for Pateryn because if he doesn't come to camp with his skating much improved then he will probably find himself in the ECHL. Ideally he will work on his skating by training camp and he'll be able to play bottom-pairing minutes in the AHL for the Canadiens' affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs.

2011-12 Statistics:
Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL)63 GP | 21 G | 39 A | 60 PTS | 67 PIM

CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Born in France.
-Named to the 2009-10 QMJHL All-Rookie Team.
-Was the captain of the Armada this season.

Thoughts
Yesterday, the Detroit Red Wings announced the signing of eighteen-year old Xavier Ouellet to a three-year entry level contract. Ouellet was drafted by Detroit in the second round of last years draft. Since that time, the french-born Ouellet, has been terrific. After his club — the MontrĂ©al Juniors (QMJHL) — were relocated to  Boisbriand, he was given a much larger role on the team. Immediately he was handed the captaincy, and top-pairing minutes. He has been up to the challenge all season and has produced tremendously at both ends of the ice. His sixty points led all Blainville-Boisbriand defensemen, and was third-most of all QMJHL defensemen.

Ouellet plays a very polished game at both ends of the ice. When he is in possession of the puck, whether its in his own end or in the offensive zone, he rarely ever will make a wrong decision with the puck. As is the case with most good defenseman, his hockey sense is tremendous. That above average hockey sense really does a lot for him as it enables him to be responsible and positionally sound in his own end, while still being an active puck-mover. He also does a good job at reading the play and making split-second decisions to avoid any problematic situations. One of the biggest things about his game however, is his ability to break the puck out and create offensive opportunities. He can make some terrific first passes to create odd-man rushes or skate the puck up himself if the situation asks for it. There is no better player in the QMJHL when it comes to transitioning the puck from defense to offense, and I believe the Red Wings realize how valuable of an asset that really is.

He has shown a lot this season, but he definitely needs a bit more time. I think he'll be back in the QMJHL next season, but the following year he will be given every opportunity to make the pro-club out of camp. With that said, the Red Wings usually opt to be more patient with their prospects so I could see him getting a few years in the AHL first.

Detroit Red Wings Sign Ryan Sproul To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract

Photo From: LINK
D. Ryan Sproul

2011-12 Statistics:
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)61GP | 23 G | 31 A | 54 PTS | 53 PIM

CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Named to the 2010-11 OHL Second All-Rookie Team
-Originally was going to play in the NCAA, but chose OHL instead.

Thoughts
Along with Xavier Ouellet, the Detroit Red Wings announced the signing of another prospect in defenseman, Ryan Sproul. Signed to the typical three-year entry level contract, Sproul will report to Grand Rapids (Red Wings AHL Affiliate) on an Amateur Try-Out. The Red Wings drafted Sproul in the second round of last year's draft.

Ryan Sproul has more upside than most other Red Wing prospects, but he also has just as much risk attached to him as well. Currently his game seems to revolve around his offensive talent. His shot seems to be one of his biggest assets and from the point on the power play, it is deadly. He also does a very nice job at starting a rush. A common theme amongst Red Wing prospects is good hockey smarts, and that holds true for Sproul. He see's the ice extremely well and can thread the needle from the point with ease. His offensive game looks to be NHL caliber already, but defensively he has a lot of flaws. At 6-4, you'd expect that he'd be willing to use his body, but he has shown almost no physicality. He also needs to add some muscle to his large and skinny frame. He will need a lot of time to refine his game at both ends of the rink, but he could definitely turn out to be a fantastic NHL defenseman.

He needs a lot more time at lower levels. I think one more season in the OHL wouldn't hurt and then maybe some time in the AHL.

CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC)

Important Facts:
-Was drafted in the OHL, but chose NCAA path.
-Named to the 2009-10 NCAA (CCHA) All-Rookie Team.
-Named the 2010-11 NCAA (CCHA) Best Offensive Defenseman.
-Named to the 2010-11 NCAA (CCHA) First All-Star Team.
-Most points of any NCAA (CCHA) defenseman for the 2010-11 season.
-Named captain of Michigan State for the 2011-12 season.
-Named the 2011-12 NCAA (CCHA) Best Offensive Defenseman.
-Named to the 2011-12 NCAA (CCHA) First All-Star Team.
-Named the 2011-12 NCAA (CCHA) Player Of The Year.
-Named a finalist for the 2011-12 NCAA "Hobey Baker Award".

Thoughts
I guess the rich just get richer…the Boston Bruins announced the signing of "Hobey Baker" finalist, Torey Krug. The contract — a three-year Entry Level Contract — is littered with various bonuses, but it has been reported that a handful of teams (including the Islanders) had similar, if-not better deals offered. With that being said, the Bruins are one of the more attractive teams for players in the NHL right now, and as you'll see they did everything they could to convince him.

People who haven't watched Torey Krug play always seem to think that he cannot be a good  player because of his size, but those who have seen him play would tell the naysayers that they're crazy. Krug is able to compensate for his lack of size with incredible hockey sense and on-ice vision. He straight up knows how to play the game, and he has the talent to pull off what ever he wants to do. Offensively, he is extremely effective. He moves the puck around the offensive zone very well, and has a good enough shot to be a threat in that regard as well. He is a very talented and quick skater which really helps him find all the possible options on a breakout. In my opinion, he has all the makings of a terrific power play QB at the NHL level.

In his own end, Krug is no slouch either. He is able to get his stick in the passing lanes and really cover a lot of ground despite his lack of size. He tries his absolute hardest to battle in the corners and in front of the net, and he isn't afraid to get knocked around a bit. Along with his 'team-first' attitude, he frequently will sacrifice his body to block a shot. He gives every ounce of effort he can and it really amazes me how much he gets out of his small frame.

The Bruins fell in love with Krug early in the season, and in the past few weeks have been in hot pursuit of his services. They wanted him so badly that they agreed to burn the first year of his three year contract off by having him join the Bruins NHL roster this season instead of having him sign with Providence on an ATO to finish out the year with the ELC kicking in next season, which is the case with most college UFA signings.

It'll be interesting to see how his game translates directly to the NHL, but the Bruins feel that this kid is going to be something special for them down the line.

Thoughts
This afternoon Drew Shore's agent announced that his client (Shore) has signed a three-year entry level contract with the Florida Panthers. Shore was drafted by the Panthers in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft. Since then, he has been playing with the University of Denver where he has become one of the best players in college hockey.

It was widely believed that Shore would return to Denver for his senior year to play with his two brothers, but because he decided to turn pro that will not happen. Shore has a very impressive skill-set, one in which I believe fits the pro game perfectly. He is responsible at both ends of the rink, and is willing to provide what ever his team needs. He is solid on both special teams and has the versatility to switch back in forth between the PK & PP. He plays a good strong game, and he has a nose for the net.

I like his potential which I believe is somewhere in the vicinity of a top-six forward, but more than likely as a 2nd liner.

Thoughts
The Dallas Stars have signed twenty-one year old Alex Chiasson to a three-year entry level contract. Chiasson was drafted by the Stars in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft.

Alex Chiasson has really developed into an impressive player during his time at Boston University. His talent as a power forward has flourished and he is able to use his size effectively. Sometimes he can be a little undisciplined, but as he matures that will be a thing of the past. He has really found his scoring touch and is always willing to battle around the net. He also is responsible in his own end, and will back-check just as hard as he forechecked. His intensity and work-ethic will be a huge assets for him once he makes the jump to pro hockey as I'm sure he will be able to match the needed intensity level. He has a lot of upside, and I don't believe its too much of a stretch to say he could push to make a spot on the Stars out of training camp next season.

He will join the Texas Stars, the Dallas Stars' AHL Affiliate, on an Amateur Try-Out for the rest of the season.
