Kings Make Splash At Deadline

KINGS MAKE BIG BLOCKBUSTER DEAL, ACQUIRE DUSTIN PENNER

To Kings:
Dustin Penner

To Oilers:
- Colten Teubert
- 1st Round Draft Pick in 2011

- Conditional 3rd Round Draft Pick in 2012
(could possibly turn into a 2nd)

Review:
The Kings have been in on every available (via trade or free agency) big name forward in the past year or so and have fallen short each time, but finally they have been able to make it come to fruition. The Kings brought in a key player as they acquired Dustin Penner. Penner is a big guy at 6'4 and 245 pounds, and he uses his enormous size to his advantage by standing in front of the net and making goalies lives hell. He always fearlessly enters the dirty areas on the ice and will usually win the battles. But its not only his size that makes him a good player he has a strong hockey sense and nice set of hands. So far this year he has put up good numbers on a bad Edmonton Oilers team, with 21 goals and 18 assists for 39 points in 62 games. Last season he had a career year with 63 points, which all lead to the fact that it seems Penner is starting to enter the prime of his career. With Anze Kopitar as his Center, it would not surprise me to see Penner become an even more lethal goal scorer and maybe in the near future become a 40 goal scorer. At just 28 years old, he will have plenty of time to take his game to that level and further his status as one of the best power forwards in the game right now. Now although I think Penner is a terrific player the Kings did have to pay a large price to acquire his services. The package the Oilers received was Colton Teubert, a 1st round draft pick in this year's draft, and a conditional 3rd round draft pick (that could possibly turn into a 2nd round pick) in next year's draft. Teubert is a big strong defenseman that stands tall at 6'4 and weighs 194 pounds. He was the 13th overall pick in 2008 draft by the Kings and has played 39 games for Manchester of the AHL, and has 2 goals and 8 assists for 10 points. Teubert is known for his mean side on the ice. He is a tough SOB and will knock the crap out of anyone. He loves to throw big hits and although he might take himself out of position occasionally trying to achieve them, its a big part of his game. But his nastiness is only one part of his play, he is a terrific all around defenseman. He has a huge shot that can be used on the PP and makes a nice 1st pass from his own zone out. Consistency seems to be a bit of an issue at times with him but as he develops further and matures he will learn how to fix that. At 20 years old (8 days from 21), he seems like a hugely promising defenseman that will scare opponents silly for a long time with the Oilers. Along with Teubert, the Oilers received a 1st round draft pick in this year's draft. I don't even have to explain how important that is for a team like the Oilers who now will walk away from June's draft with potentially two young stars. The conditional pick will either be a 3rd round draft pick in 2012 or a 2nd round draft pick in 2012, depending on how the Kings do in the Playoffs.

Short-Term Winner: Kings, they don't lose any current roster players and were able to get a player that will be huge for their team and might just be the missing piece to help them be cup contenders. They have finally gotten their star 1st line winger that they have been looking for, for years.

Long-Term Winner: Oilers, even though the Kings were able to grab a terrific player that is still in his 20's, the Oilers just got too many good future assets to lose this trade in the long-term. Teubert WILL be an NHL player, I guarantee that and in my opinion he will be a damn good one. He's gonna be a stud for the Oilers and to make it even better he should be ready for some NHL time soon. The 1st round pick is huge for this organization who now have a plethora of young talent waiting for them at the 2011 draft. To just top off the impressive package they get a 3rd or 2nd round pick in next years draft.

Senators Acquire Another Draft Pick

To Senators:
Ryan Potulny
2nd-Round Draft Pick in 2011

To Blackhawks:
Chris Campoli
Conditional 7th-Round Draft Pick in 2011

Review:
As we all know, or at least should know...the Senators spent this deadline trading any player that didn't fit in their long term plans, for draft picks. This is just another one of those type of moves. The Blackhawks were in need of another bottom-pairing defenseman because of the season ending injury to Jordan Hendry so they went out and took a chance on a puck mover in Chris Campoli. Campoli once was a promising defenseman with the NY Islanders but he was unhappy and requested a trade, Garth Snow moved him to the Senators for a 1st round draft pick and his career has plummeted since. Most indications are that Campoli will be used as purely a short term solution for this Blackhawks blue-line. The Senators have to be happy with this deal as they get a 2nd round draft pick and a decent bottom 6 forward in Potulny for Campoli, who Bryan Murray revealed following the trade, was not going to be qualified as a RFA in the off-season which would have let him walk as an unrestricted free agent. So in the Senators mind they basically got a 2nd round pick and Potulny for nothing but a CONDITIONAL 7th round pick that is only given up if the Sens decide to re-sign Potulny. Its very good asset management by Bryan Murray, who has been under a lot of scrutiny as of late.

Winner Short-Term: Senators, just looking at how it helps them today they get a solid bottom 6 forward for a defenseman they had no use for.

Winner Long-Term: Big win by the Senators, its essentially a free 2nd round draft pick in Bryan Murray's mind so that has to be applauded.

Coyotes and Blue Jackets Swap Talented Players

To Coyotes:
Rostislav Klesla
Dane Byers

To Blue Jackets:
Scottie Upshall
Sami Lepisto

Review:
The Yotes needed some help on the blue line and by acquiring Klesla they get a very solid top 4 defenseman. Although he might not put up a huge amount of points he will shutdown opponents' top line's night in and night out. He does not make too many mistakes in his own end and that shows with his impressive plus/minus (+10), which happens to be 29th in the entire NHL for defensemen. Klesla was the first player ever drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets organization and this trade moves out the final member of the original Blue Jackets roster that still remained on the current roster. Along with Klesla, forward Dane Byers was sent to the Coyotes as well but will likely remain on the AHL roster for however long his tenure will be in the organization. Despite the historic element to Klesla, the Jackets needed to make this move because it really is just too good for them to pass up. The players they received, Scottie Upshall and Sami Lepisto are both really strong players that will make an impact on this team. Upshall plays a physical, agitator type game and is able to put up a lot of points in the process. His willingness to go into the dirty areas is something that this Blue Jacket team has lacked and will welcome. But what makes him so unique is the fact that he also puts up a ton of points. He was tied for the lead in goals for the Coyotes with 16 and has been a big time point getter thus far this season. Lepisto at 26 years old has finally put it all together and has developed into a solid puck-moving top 6 defenseman. He has 11 points in 51 games and a solid plus-7 rating. He still has potential that has yet to be reached and the Jackets will give him ample opportunity to achieve it.

Short-Term Winner: EVEN, Both sides get real quality players that improve each squad.

Long-Term Winner: EVEN as well, its a very solid deal for both sides and all players are around the same age's which makes it even for the future.

Vancouver Acquires Chris Higgins

To Vancouver:

Christopher Higgins

To Florida:
Evan Oberg
3rd Round Draft Pick in the 2013

Review:
The Canucks main goal heading into the deadline was to upgrade their bottom 6 group of forwards. This deal did exactly that by adding the 27 year old, Chris Higgins to their club. Higgins has had a very interesting career thus far in which he started out as a big time scorer with the Canadiens to becoming a outcast that took the first contract that came his way to now where he has turned into a decent 3rd line type player. This deal gives him another opportunity and "new chapter" to his career. The speed he brings to the table will be useful to the Nucks' PK which will be boosted by this deal. So far this season he has 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points in 48 games played and also had one of the best plus/minus's on the Panthers with a +5. The assets the Canucks gave up for Higgins were not too valuable so I am sure they are happy with this. Those assets include 23 year old defenseman Evan Oberg and a 3rd round pick in 2013. Oberg may have a future in the NHL but his potential is not huge as his upside would probably be a depth defenseman. So far this season in Manitoba of the AHL, he has put up only 11 points in 37 games played. The draft pick is good for the re-building team but it being a 2013 pick, the player drafted in that spot most likely won't make an impact until 2016 if ever.

Short-Term Winner: Canucks, they give up very little for a player they needed. He will play an important role in their bottom 6.

Long-Term Winner: Canucks, they get Higgins who is still on the early side of his career at 27 years old and gave up assets that don't have a huge chance of materializing into anything of value.

Arnott No Longer A Devil

To Washington Capitals:
Jason Arnott

To New Jersey Devils:
David Steckel
Second-Round Pick in the 2012 draft

Review:
The Capitals rounded out their day by getting a veteran Center that will finally fill out their 2nd line C role that has been vacant for so long. This deal provides them with a player that will be a huge asset to their locker room and on the ice. He also will help out their struggling power play as he is able to take over the point effectively on the man advantage. At 36, he is still able to put up a good amount of points as so far this season he has had 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points. Arnott is in his last year on his contract so in all likely hood he will be a rental just for the rest of this season for the Caps. From that perspective they did have to pay a lot but I am sure they are satisfied with nailing their target. The player moved in return to the Devils was big 6'5 Center David Steckel. Steckel is one of the best face-off men in the entire NHL as he leads all players that have taken more than 50 face-offs, in face-off percentage with a 63.7% and a record of 427-243. His point production is not huge, through 57 games this season he has only put up 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points, but his game is well rounded in all zones. In addition to Steckel, the Devils received a 2nd Round Draft Pick in 2012 in this deal which really makes it a very strong swap for both sides.

Winner Short-Term: Capitals, they got a seasoned player who will be important going forward. But this is not saying the Devils were screwed in the short term as Steckel will make a big impact with this club.

Winner Long-Term: Devils for sure, they get a terrific 28 year old bottom 6 forward and a 2nd Round Draft Pick for a player in Arnott that might only be playing a few more months of hockey. Terrific return for the Devils.

Dennis Wideman Traded To Capitals

To Washington Capitals:
Dennis Wideman

To Florida Panthers :
Jake Hauswirth
Third-Round Pick in the 2011 draft

REVIEW:
The Capitals get a talented offensive defenseman that will do a good job on the Power Play. So far this year he has 33 points and he has been strong in the offensive zone but one really troubling stat is he has a minus-26 rating. Even though the Panthers have struggled this season, that plus/minus is horrific so it bears watching with the Caps. Another issue raised by this trade, is the fact that the style of play that Wideman brings to the table is a bit redundant in the Capitals system. But, with Mike Green out with a potentially long term injury, Wideman can effectively fill that role until Green returns. A major plus to this deal is that the Capitals didn't have to give up anything too big of value for him. The 23 year old borderline prospect, Jake Hauswirth, was sent to the Panthers. Hauswirth is a big 6'5 Center that has been toiling in the ECHL and has put up only 14 points in 37 games. As of right now, it doesn't seem like he has much of an NHL future. Also coming with him, is a 3rd round draft pick for this year. The 3rd round pick was the main piece coming back to the Panthers as they look to re-build their club.

Short-Term Winner: Capitals, they get a solid top 4 defenseman for basically a 3rd round draft pick. The fact that they could add without subtracting any current roster players is a good thing.

Long-Term Winner: Capitals, Wideman is young at just 27 and they gave up a non-prospect in Hauswirth and a 3rd round draft pick which is obviously not a give-in to produce an NHL player.
