Kings Re-Sign Doughty

Kings (Finally) Sign Drew Doughty To A Massive 8 Year Deal
TSN Press Release
The Los Angeles Kings have reached a verbal agreement on a multi-year contract with prized defenceman Drew Doughty. According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the deal is an eight year contract worth $56 million. "The Kings had been very public and very emphatic that they were not going to pay any more than $6.8 million a year," McKenzie said. "They obviously came off of that and went to $7 million. They got the deal done and got the extra year for their troubles - from seven to eight years - and they're content with that." The agreement brings to a close what was believed to be a difficult negotiation between Doughty and Kings that had dragged through the summer and into September with very little progress. Doughty missed all five of Los Angeles' pre-season games as negotiations dragged on. "The two sides have been at an impasse since the beginning of training camp and it was only today that general manager Dean Lombardi reached out to Don Meehan, the agent for Doughty, and got things re-established," McKenzie said. "This is a big year for the LA Kings," McKenzie continued. "They feel like they need Doughty in the lineup and if they don't, it's a huge hole." Doughty, will reportedly fly to Los Angeles on Friday and will take his physical before signing the deal. "I definitely didn't want to miss that (trip to Europe)," Doughty told LAKingsinsider.com. "This was never in mind, even being out for this long at all, but I knew I had to be there for the start of the season. "I missed the boys a lot, and missed being in L.A., and this just felt like time to get it done and I'm really happy and really excited." The 21-year-old has built a strong resume after three NHL seasons. The native of London, Ontario has 126 points in 239 contests while quarterbacking the Kings' power play, and was a finalist for the Norris Trophy after the 2009-10 season. He was also named the Kings Outstanding Defenceman for three straight seasons and he was voted as the clubs best newcomer following his first year with the Kings. He was also on the gold medal-winning Canadian team at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Doughty statistically ranks among the best defencemen to ever play for the Kings. His nine career game-winning goals ranks fourth all-time among Kings defencemen and his 17 career power-play goals ranks ninth all-time. He also ranks 12th on the all-time list in career goals (33), 13th on the all-time list in both career assists (93) and career points (126), and tied for 15th on the all-time list in career plus/minus rating (plus-16). The 6-foot, 211-pound defenceman was the Kings' first-round choice, second overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

PattyB Thoughts:
It was bound to happen sooner or later...I was holding out hope that somehow, someway Drew Doughty would have ended up in an Islanders sweater. I guess it was a bit unrealistic to believe there was any chance at all that he would be leaving the Kings, let alone leaving them to come to the Islanders. But anyway, DD is a world-class player and its good to see he will not sit out any regular season time. The Kings needed him if they were going to win anything this year or any future years for that matter. The contract terms are a lot more than what the Kings originally wanted, but they had to make some sacrifices. He got 8 years which the Kings are happy about, but for $7 million per year which is a bit more than what the Kings said was their maximum offer. Overall, the Kings will be happy having Doughty regardless of what contract he has, and Doughty will be happy being competitive with Los Angeles.

Waiver Update-9/29/2011

Waiver Update-9/29/2011:
Placed On Waivers:
Waiver Wire Players Of Interest:
D- Bobby Sanguinetti (Hurricanes)
He is an NHL ready defenseman who has a lot of potential. Honestly on most teams, he'd probably be in their top-six defense corps, but because the Canes are deep on the back-end he got pushed down the depth chart. With Jurcina's recent injury, I think it might be a smart move by the Isles to grab him. He could be that value-type pick-up the Isles always love to grab.
RW- Jerome Samson (Hurricanes)
For two years straight he put up more than a PPG in the AHL, and has looked decent in his call-up appearances. He hasn't been able to transfer his AHL offensive abilities to the NHL yet, but he is still young. Luckily for him, he provides more than just offense...he is an energetic forward who is always moving his feet and going into dirty areas on the ice to win the puck.

Other Players Placed On Waivers Today:
G- Michael Leighton (Flyers)
G- Tyler Plante (Panthers)
G- Yann Danis (Oilers)
LW- Chris Durno (Hurricanes)
C- Jon Matsumoto (Hurricanes)
D- Mathieu Roy (Hurricanes)
G- Justin Peters (Hurricanes)
LW- Brett Sutter (Hurricanes)
D- Bryan Rodney (Ducks)
LW- Chris Bourque (Capitals)
D- Sean Collins (Capitals)
D- Patrick McNeill (Capitals)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Claimed Off Waivers (Waived 9/28)
RW- Nick Johnson (Waived By Penguins)(Claimed By Wild)-- He is NHL ready for sure, and he is going to be a decent depth player for the Wild. He works hard and has good hands, but is a bit on the older side for a rookie at 25 years old. I expect him to see some time on the Wild's 3rd line, and I believe he will do a good job with them. The loss of Nick Johnson for the Penguins is not devastating, but it definitely hurts their wing depth. They might sign or trade for a minor league/fringe NHL type winger.
Cleared Waivers (Waived On 9/26/11):
G- Mike McKenna (Senators)
LW- J.F. Jacques (Ducks)
RW- Colin McDonald (Penguins)
LW- Ryan Craig (Penguins)
G- Scott Munroe (Penguins)
D- Alex Henry (Canadiens)

Islanders Make First Cut; Waive 5

Islanders Waive 5 Players, Most Notably Ty Wishart
Players Cut:
D. Ty Wishart (Waived With The Intent Of Sending To Bridgeport)--
After being acquired by the Islanders from the Tampa Bay Lightning, he looked decent down the stretch last year. Unfortunately, that did not carry over into training camp this year. He has looked awful in his pre-season action, and I heard he came into camp a bit out of shape. For a player who is trying to earn an NHL job, coming to camp out of shape is simply unacceptable. Luckily for Wishart, he is still very young at twenty-three years old and he has all the tools to one day be successful. There is a chance he could get claimed, and quite honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he does. He has really nice size and decent upside, which some teams might fall for. If he clears, he will get a lot of time in Bridgeport in their top-four which may be the best thing for him.

C. Trevor Frischmon (Waived With The Intent Of Sending To Bridgeport)--
The Islanders signed him for AHL depth, which makes it pretty unsurprising to hear that he has been waived, in order for the Islanders to send him to Bridgeport. He looked decent in his pre-season action, and will be a quality depth player in the Isles organization. He will clear waivers.
RW. Tim Wallace (Waived With The Intent Of Sending To Bridgeport)--
He is in the same boat as Frischmon, they are both guys brought in particularly for AHL depth. Wallace though, was very good in his pre-season appearances, at least in my opinion. He was always moving his feet and finishing his checks. He did a great job in the corners, and created a few opportunities. He will clear waivers and will be a terrific AHL player for us.

C. Tomas Marcinko (Waived With The Intent Of Sending To Bridgeport)--
Being one of the first cuts is an awful sign for Marcinko. This season is imperative to Marcinko's career. He must preform where ever he plays, and thus far in training camp, he has been unimpressive. The fact that the coaches thought they saw enough of him with a good week left of camp is troubling. He will clear, and will play possibly his last season in North America with the Sound Tigers.

D. Dylan Reese (Waived With The Intent Of Sending To Bridgeport)--
Not an awful AHL defenseman, but is definitely not an everyday NHL players so this move was pretty much expected. He hasn't looked bad offensively, but in his own zone he has not been too good. He is not a bad guy to have down in your organizations depth chart in case of injuries, but he will clear waivers.

Game Overview:
A lot of fringe players on the Islanders roster which means this game is going to be an interesting one. What I am looking forward to, is seeing Ryan Strome and my good friend, Kirill Kabanov together. On that note, I would look for some gritty play from Kabanov…maybe some chirping. Kabby won't be the only one playing a gritty game though as this Islanders team is filled with gritty, physical players. Its gonna be a fun one to watch.

Waiver Update-9/27/2011

Waiver Update-9/27/2011:
Placed On Waivers:
Waiver Wire Players Of Interest:
D- Arturs Kulda (Jets):
I really like this kid. He is a good defenseman, especially in his own end. He has good awareness and uses it to play a very simplified, yet effective game. I think he is ready for the NHL and what ever team that ends up with him will be happy. This could possibly be a player the Isles would like so keep an eye out.
C- Zach Hamill (Boston):
There is a reason this kid was drafted as high as he was. He has put up decent AHL numbers and I believe he is NHL ready. He had an impressive pre-season as he utilized all of his assets. He distributes the puck well and has a good two-way game. I might be wrong (as I have been with many waived players through the past few days), but I believe he 100 percent will get claimed.
LW- Tom Sestito (Flyers):
Don't get me wrong, his hit last night was disgusting, but I still really like this kid. He is young at just twenty-three years old and I personally believe he is NHL ready. He is huge and is a very effective enforcer, who also plays a decent offensive game.
RW- Andreas Thuresson (Rangers):
At just twenty-three years old, I believe this kid still has a lot of room to improve. He's a very hard worker which helps him play well on both sides of the puck. He looked terrific in his pre-season action with the Rangers. He might be a nice pick-up for someone.

Waiver Update-9/26/2011

Waiver Update-9/26/2011:
Today's Players Waived:

Interesting Possibilities:

RW- Michal Repik (Panthers)
- I am shocked by this....This is Grabner all over again. Repik at only 22 years old has done extremely well in the AHL, and has not been bad in the NHL. He has so much offensive talent, his hands are above average and he has good on-ice vision. I think this kid is NHL ready and I know he has high-end potential.

D- Dennis Persson (Sabres)
- Former 1st round draft pick who has been a bit of a disappointment thus far, but that can change. He is a good puck-mover and he see's the ice well, and he MIGHT have a lot more upside than people believe. He would definitely be a high risk, high reward type pick-up.

LW- Christian Hanson (Capitals)
- Young, physical forward that is solid in all three zones. Bottom-six forward, but he could end up being one of the better grinders out there.

RW- Dan Sexton (Ducks)
- Sexton is 24 years old, and he has played a good amount of NHL time. Ducks fans don't seem to like him too much, but there is no denying this kid has some talent. He is quick and he knows where to be on the ice. He has put up solid numbers and I believe he still has a lot more upside left that he hasn't reached yet.

D- Mathieu Carle (Ducks)
- He is one of the younger players on the waiver wire at 23 years old. He is a puck-moving defenseman that does a nice job distributing the puck in all three zones. He is not great in his own end, but he is still young. I think he has top-four upside.
