Sens Land Da Costa

Senators Sign Highly Touted, Stephane Da Costa
Taken From: ESPN
"OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators have landed highly coveted NCAA prospect Stephane Da Costa. The free-agent forward signed a two-year, entry-level contract with Ottawa Thursday. A number of NHL teams expressed interest in Da Costa, who had 30 goals and 90 points in 67 games in two seasons with Merrimack College. Da Costa is a native of Paris, and he's the first Frenchman to sign with the Senators. The 21-year-old represented his country at last year's world championships."
PattyB Thoughts:
This is big time news for the Ottawa Senators as Da Costa was by far the most sought after College Free Agent this season and probably more than any for the past few seasons. The reason I say that is because if you compare previous big fish NCAA Free Agents Tyler Bozak (41GP 18G 16A 34P at age 21) and Bobby Butler (38GP 9G 21A 30P at age 21) to Da Costa (33GP 14G 31A 45P at age 21), his stats are dramatically better. Bob McKenzie, who broke the news, reported a little over a week ago that around 20 NHL teams had approached him about signing a deal. After his team (Merrimack) was eliminated from the NCAA Championships, Da Costa was free to sign where ever he pleased. As we found out this afternoon, the team he wanted to go join was the Ottawa Senators. His ELC is a 2-year deal which due to his age is the standard contract. But for the Paris born Da Costa, he won't be eased into his professional transition as its been reported he will be playing for the Senators Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, who most likely were big time suitors for him as well.

Matt Donovan Sign's ELC With NY Islanders

Islanders Sign Matt Donovan To An Entry Level Contract
Taken From: www.Islanders.nhl.com
"On Wednesday morning, the New York Islanders signed yet another one of their 2008 draft selections to an entry-level contract. Matt Donovan, who spent the last two seasons defending the blue-line at the University of Denver, inked his deal. “I’m very, very excited,” Donovan said when reached by phone. “I hope that I can play the same game that I’ve played my whole life, continue to play solid defensively and hopefully contribute offensively as well.” While his entry-level deal will not kick in until the 2011-12 season, Donovan will report to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers immediately, where he will play the remainder of the 2010-11 season with the Islanders American Hockey League affiliate on an Amateur Tryout Contract. “Starting now will just help me get my feet wet in my professional hockey career,” Donovan said. “It will help me figure out where I am and where need to be (talent and endurance wise), which will really help me figure out how hard I need to work this summer to make it to the Island.” In his sophomore season, Donovan surpassed all other Pioneers defensemen in scoring, posting a career-best 32 points (9 goals, 23 assists), bypassing his 7 goal, 14 assist freshman season by 11 points. “My defensive game has gotten a lot stronger over the last couple of years,” the Edmond, Oklahoma native said. “I’m a defenseman, but more specifically and offensive defenseman.” Donovan continued, “I like to contribute offensively and my defensive skills weren’t always there or I wasn’t playing well defensively, but I think the past couple years, specifically this past year, I’ve developed a lot better defensively.” The 20-year-old said he owes a lot of that improvement to his coaches at Denver. “It was unbelievable,” Donovan said. “The coaches are awesome, all the guys are awesome. I had a great two years there. I think the coaches and the staff all helped me develop a lot and I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Now that his collegiate career is over, defenseman has started to look towards his future. He knows his transition to the Arena at Harbor Yard will be seamless, especially since he’s friends with Rhett Rakhshani, who has been selected to the AHL’s All-Rookie Team, and Aaron Ness, who signed his entry-level contract with the Islanders franchise last week. While Donovan’s excited to get started, he knows this is just the beginning for him. “Hopefully I’m playing in the NHL soon,” Donovan said. “That’s my main goal. That’s what I’ve always dreamed of doing and hopefully that’s where I’m headed.”"

PattyB Thoughts:
Matt Donovan is the 10th player picked by the NY Islanders in the 2008 draft to be signed to an Entry Level Contract by an NHL team and the Islanders couldn't be happier with this particular one. Donovan has been one of many pleasant surprises to come out of that draft and he is slated to become a key piece of the Isles organization. In only his 2nd year at Denver he put up 32 points and was known as one of the best defensemen in NCAA hockey. His style is very solid on both sides of the puck mainly due to the fact he has a solid set of wheels which enables him to get involved offensively but be able to get back into position in case of a turnover. In his own zone he is positionally sound and is reminiscent of Andrew MacDonald in the sense that he doesn't have any huge asset that sets him apart defensively he just knows the game well enough that he is always in every passing and shooting lane. In the offensive zone he is above average, he see's the ice well and can make very nice passes. Although, if need be, he can QB the Power Play ideally he would be used as just a solid two way defenseman with possibly time on the 2nd PP unit. Donovan has been sent to Bridgeport and will remain there for the remainder of the season. It will be interesting to see his transition to the pro-game as he will most likely be thrown right into the fire with some decent minutes. Although he is playing for the Islanders AHL affiliate it's being done through an ATO (Amateur Try-Out) which enable's his Entry Level Contract to begin next season (2011-12).

Doug Weight Officially Out For The Season

DOUG WEIGHT SEASON, AND POSSIBLY CAREER, COMING TO AN END
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=359986
"A chronic back injury has sidelined Doug Weight for the rest of the season. The New York Islanders' captain has been dealing with back spasms since November, which has kept him out of the Islanders' lineup for all but 18 games this season. In that time, he's recorded two goals and nine points. He has been limited to just 107 games over the last three seasons with the Islanders. He previously underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in March of last year. Weight, 40, has 19 NHL seasons under his belt, appearing in 1,238 games since entering the league with the New York Rangers in 1991. He also played for the Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes and Anaheim Ducks before signing a free-agent contract with the Islanders in July 2008. He won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006, posting 16 points in 23 playoff games that season."
PattyB Thoughts:
It looks as though Dougie is headed towards retirement but various sources have said he will be taking over a role in the front office with the NY Islanders. Earlier this season, it was reported he was coaching the Power Play in his time on the IR so it led some to believe he may take over some sort of a coaching role going forward. Some have even suggested he being a legit candidate for head coach but even Charles Wang is not that short sighted (at least I hope he is not). If I had to guess, I would say he will take over as an assistant coach of some kind.

Islanders Re-Sign G. Al Montoya To A One-Year Extension

AL MONTOYA SIGNS ONE-YEAR EXTENSION WITH NY ISLANDERS
Taken From
: http://islanders.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=557576

"The New York Islanders announced today that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension with goaltender Al Montoya. The contract will keep him with the club through the 2011-12 season. Montoya, 26, has a record of 8-4-4 with a 2.35 goals against average (GAA) and a .923 save percentage (save%) in 17 games with the Islanders this season. The Chicago, IL. native was acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes on Feb. 9, 2011 in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Originally selected by the New York Rangers in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Montoya has played in 197 career American Hockey League games with the Hartford Wolf Pack and San Antonio Rampage, compiling a 96-72-7 record with nine shutouts. Prior to joining the Islanders, the 6’2”, 195-pound goalie had played in five career NHL games, all with Phoenix, and posted a 3-1-0 record with a 2.08 GAA and a .925 save%. In 22 career NHL games, Montoya is 11-5-4 with a 2.29 GAA and a .924 save%.
Montoya played three years of college hockey at the University of Michigan, where he finished his career tied for the all-time best career save% (90.8) in U. Michigan history, third in GAA (2.36), third in shutouts (13) and fourth in wins (86)."
PattyB Thoughts:
On February 9th when the NY Islanders traded their 6th Round Draft Pick (in this upcoming draft) for Al Montoya, I was not pleased. I looked at this deal as Garth Snow just tossing away a draft pick for a few months of a mediocre goalie. But, before you start to think I am crazy, lets go over Montoya's resume at that point...Montoya at the time of the deal was 25 years old (turned 26 on Feb. 13th), had played only 5 NHL games despite having played 6 years in the AHL, his stats in San Antonio (AHL) this year were disappointing to say the least (3.19 GAA, 0.891 Save %), and was considered a major "bust" throughout the hockey world. But within a month, Montoya had become a major piece of this revitalized Islanders club. Nobody back in 2004 (after Montoya was drafted 6th overall by the Isles crosstown rival, the Rangers) would have imagined Al stealing games for the other team in NY. But now, lo-and-behold he is going to be an Islander, along with his one time combatant in Rick DiPietro, for another season. The talent, that once made him the hottest goaltending prospect in hockey is finally starting to shine through and many believe (along with myself) that this may be the start to an effective NHL career. The one year extension he received is more than reasonable from an Isles perspective as he will now be given one more season to prove the past month or so was no "flash in the pan" type scenario.

Preview Of The Season Review

PREVIEW OF THE SEASON REVIEW:
On the night the Isles were officially eliminated from post-season contention, I felt it fitting to reveal my season review.

As the season dwindles down in the NHL and other leagues begin to rap up their year, I would like to start my season review, player status update, and future/off-season analysis for each player in the Islanders organization. It will be done one player at a time and only to players who have officially ended their season; that means that they are done with all regular season games, their team is eliminated from playoff action, and their is no possibility of any AHL time. I took this depth chart from The Hockey News and it will be my guide and indicator for this project. Once a player has his report written up, his name will be highlighted with red. This ranking displays none of my personal opinions, but once done with all player profiles I will post my own depth chart heading into the off-season.
