The Hurricanes are clearly doing anything they possibly can to spark this team. They fired their coach, and are trying to tweak their roster as well. Their first roster move was claiming forward, Andreas Nodl off of waivers. Nodl was originally a Flyers 2nd round draft pick in 2006 and has played for the club full-time for the past two seasons. Nodl is a defensive specialist who will surely help the Hurricanes penalty kill. His best asset is his skating (which seems to be the common skill of Austrian players) which enables him to stay in position almost always. He won't provide much offensively, but if he is played in the right situations the Hurricanes will be happy with him as a bottom-six winger. I think he will do well with the Hurricanes, and from their perspective there really is nothing to lose from this.
