Maple Leafs STEAL From The Predators
To Toronto:
Cody Franson
Matthew Lombardi
Conditional 4th Round Pick In 2013 (If Lombardi doesn't play 60 games over next 2 years)
To Nashville:
Brett Lebda
Robert Slaney
Conditional 4th Round Pick In 2013 (if Lombardi plays 60 games over next 2 years)
Review:
This deal is one of the most lopsided I have seen in a long, long time. The Leafs get a very solid, young defenseman in Cody Franson who at 23 years old, in his first full NHL season, put up 29 points. He has some nice size and is very impressive on the power play. I look at him as a solid power play quarter-back that might grow into an all-around type role. I really like his potential and I'm VERY surprised the Predators gave him up for that type of return. Not only did they move him, but they also gave up Matthew Lombardi. Lombardi has had some serious injury problems, but when he is healthy he's a very good player. At 29 years old, he has been consistent 40 point guy year in-and-year out. His offensive play is just one minor aspect of his game, as his true calling is his two-way, defensive style. He is an incredible penalty killer and he uses his speed to get back to his own zone quickly. They got these two guys for legit nothing, as Brett Lebda is one of the worst defensemen in the National Hockey League, at least in my opinion, and Robert Slanely is a guy that spent most of last season in the ECHL and wasn't necessarily good down there. This has to be one of the weirdest trades I have ever seen, and I feel like its one of the most lopsided moves of this off-season. The Leafs get two quality players (one may have injury struggles, but still) for guys they would have just as well released.
Winner: Leafs without a doubt, they STOLE from the Preds. I love this deal for them.
Kabanov Signs Entry Level Contract
Kabanov Signs 3-Year ELC With Isles
Islanders Press Release
PattyB Thoughts:
Kirill Kabanov has a ton of skill and in the playoffs with Lewiston, he was able to display that. He carried the club on his shoulders deep into the playoffs and earned the respect of many people in the hockey world. He is a good kid that truly is one of the nicest hockey players I have met. He has a very out-going, fun personality which is enjoyable to be around. He has learned in the past year or so when he should and should not be letting that fun side of him show itself as he has matured immensely. At 18 years old, he is one of the youngest Islanders signed to an entry level contract and I expect him to be sent back to the "Q" just because at his age he can only play in the NHL or in the QMJHL. I don't believe he is ready for the NHL which means he would have to play juniors.
Islanders Press Release
"The New York Islanders announced today that they have agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level contract with Kirill Kabanov. He set career high numbers this past season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, splitting the year with the Moncton Wildcats and the Lewiston MAINEiacs. In 39 total games, the 18-year-old forward scored 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points. He also played 15 QMJHL playoff games, averaging over a point a game with 20 (8 goals and twelve assists). The Moscow, Russia native was named one of the three finalists for the league’s Humanitarian Player of the Year for his contributions to the Lewiston/Auburn community. Kabanov played for Moncton during the 2009-10 season, recording 23 points (10 goals and 13 assists) in 22 games. Internationally, Kabanov has represented Russia at the 2009 Under-18 World Junior Championships, tallying 11 points (four goals and seven assists) in seven games to help his country win a silver medal. Kabanov, selected in the third round (65th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, also played in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and the 5 Nations Under-18 Tournament."

Islanders Sign Marty Reasoner
Marty Reasoner Joins The New York Islanders For The Next Two Seasons
Press Release In preparation of the long holiday weekend, businesses across Long Island closed up shop early. July 1 marked the start of a weekend where Americans host barbeques, watch fireworks, let their kids run around with sparklers and wear an inordinate amount of red, white and blue to celebrate the Nation’s independence. Friday also marks one of the busiest hockey days of the summer for hockey operations and communications departments throughout the National Hockey League. Known as the “Free Agency Frenzy,” teams throughout the NHL dealt players and signed unrestricted free agents for top dollar. On Long Island, fans wondered what kind of acquisition Islanders General Manager Garth Snow would make. At approximately 3:15 p.m., those questions were answered as the news of Marty Reasoner’s two-year contract hit the press wire. “We’re extremely excited to add Marty to the organization,” Snow said. “He provides leadership. He has great speed that will help us in the offensive zone. He will be relied on in important faceoff situations.” Snow added, “We didn’t have many holes on our roster going in to this day, but Marty is a player that can help create that competition and produce.” A veteran of the league, Reasoner was drafted by the St. Louis Blues 14th overall in 1996 and then signed his entry-level contract two years later, making his NHL debut during the 1998-99 season. Three seasons later, he joined the Edmonton Oilers, where he played the majority of the next six seasons and grew into his own. A trade deadline transaction sent the Honeoye, NY native to Boston for the final 19 games of the 2005-06 season. Then in 2008-09, Reasoner played two seasons for the Atlanta Thrashers before playing all 82 games with the Florida Panthers last season, recording an NHL career-high 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists). Reasoner, who will enter his 12th NHL season this October, served as an assistant captain several times throughout his career, thus he’s excited and expected to bring leadership to the Islanders young core. “It’s exciting going to a good young team,” Reasoner said. “Having an opportunity to help this team get to the next level is going to be a good challenge and it’s going to be fun. There is a lot of excitement around the team with so many young guys. They’re on their way. I just want to go in and do my part to help.” After watching the Islanders play last season, and playing against them in four games, Reasoner watched the Islanders transformation and knows just how talented his new teammates are. “I think towards the second half of the season, a lot of people and teams started to notice they were a tough team to play against,” Reasoner said. “We played them in Florida twice during the second half and they had their way with us. They were a tough team to match up against. They are building in the right direction. Hopefully that can translate into a really good start this October so that we’ll have a great year.” Known as a two-way centerman, Reasoner is also an effective penalty killer, whose faceoff percentage ranks in the top 25 percent of the league, but what he’ll be concentrating on most, is being the player who can fill any role when needed. “I’m going to come in and work hard on faceoffs, be there on the penalty kill and be solid two-ways, trying to chip in offensively, but really be good defensively,” Reasoner said. “Really for me, it’s just trying to help out in any way that I can, whatever it may be on any given night. As you get older, you try to be as versatile as you can and be able to play in as many situations as you can.” Overall, Reasoner couldn’t be more happy with his decision to become an Islander. “I’m good friends with Mike Mottau,” Reasoner said. “I went to school with him (at Boston College) and he has only good things to say about Long Island, so my family is really excited about it. When you talk to guys and they only have good things to say about the direction of the team and how much they enjoy living there, that obviously helps make your decision.”
PattyB Thoughts:
Garth Snow has been incredible in the free agent market considering what he's had to work with. This signing continues that trend as it fills the need of a 4th line center with Marty Reasoner, who has been an elite bottom six forward. Reasoner had the 5th most points on the Panthers with 32 which is 23 points more than the player he is replacing in Zenon Konopka. One of "Z"'s biggest assets was his face off taking ability which Reasoner should have no problem replacing as he led the Panthers team in face off percentage with a 54.5%. He also is solid in his own zone which provides a good two-way presence for their bottom-six group of forward. That good defensive game is evident as he led all Panthers in take-aways with 52. The fact that Garth Snow only payed him $1,350,000 per year is a steal in my opinion as it keeps the cap-hit low, but surprisingly was enough to convince him to come to long island.

NEWS AND NOTES FOR JULY 2nd
JULY 2nd: NEWS & NOTES
Matt Gilroy Signs In Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman, Matt Gilroy, to a one-year contract worth $1 million. This is a bit of a surprising signing in my opinion, mainly due to the fact that the Lightning already had seven defenseman signed to one-way contracts so this makes it eight. Once they acquired Bruno Gervais I was under the impression that they had finished tinkering with their defense, but this obviously shows they felt as though they needed to add some more depth. I'm just unsure as to why they would sign another guy to a one-way contract when they could just sign a depth, minor-league guy on a two-way contract.
Rangers And Predators Swap Minor Leaguers
The Rangers have sent Brodie Dupont to the Nashville Predators for Andreas Thuresson. Both players are the same age, and put up similar stats in the AHL, but I actually think this deal is good for the Rangers. Thuresson is a guy I have liked for a little bit as I believe he has some nice upside he has yet to reach. I would expect him to see some NHL time next year. He might surprise some, I believe.
Rob Niedermayer Signs In Europe
Rob Niedermayer has left the NHL after a long 17 year career in the NHL. He has signed with HC Lugano of the Swiss league for only the next season. He has had a great NHL career and its sad to see him leave after all of this time.
Blackhawks Add Dan Carcillo
The Blackhawks have added some more grit and toughness to their line-up as they have signed Dan Carcillo to a 1 year contract. The deal is worth about $775,000, which if he can re-kindle his success of a few years ago with the Coyotes, he may be a very valuable asset to Chicago.
Chris Bourque Returns To The NHL
Chris Bourque has returned to the NHL after some time in Europe, and has signed a contract with the Washington Capitals who he originally played for before leaving the league.
Chris Drury Leaving NHL?
Chris Drury is rumored to be leaving North America. A few days ago he was bought out from his NHL contract with the NY Rangers and became an Unrestricted Free Agent. He hasn't received the amount of interest he would have liked and as of right now it looks like he will be signing in Europe. The Swiss league looks like a likely destination.
Jeff Tambellini Signs In Europe
According to reports former NY Islander Jeff Tambellini has signed in Europe. He was dominant in the AHL, but has never been able to translate his game to the NHL.
Brad Richards Takes His Talent To Broadway
Credit Phil Kocher- Blueshirtsbrotherhood.com
PattyB Thoughts:
At 31 years old, this was THE biggest contract Brad Richards will have earned in his career. He has been a very good player in the NHL and he provides the Rags with a great first line center to play with Marian Gaborik. I don't really like the length though because it keeps him under these big terms until he is 40 years old. The contract terms followed the trend of this free agency in the fact that its very front loaded. According to some reports, he will be getting $50 million in the first 5 years of his contract, which would be absolutely ridiculous. Out of this, there is also the concern of signing the Rangers remaining RFA's which include Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Brian Boyle, Mike Sauer, and Artem Anisimov.
Rangers Sign Top Free Agent, Brad Richards
NHL Press Release Brad Richards is off the market. The big fish among this year's crop of free agents has reportedly agreed to a nine-year contract Saturday to play for the New York Rangers. TSN's Darren Dreger is reporting Richards' deal is worth a total of $60 million for an annual cap hit of around $6.667 million. Richards spent Friday at his agent Pat Morris' office in Mississauga, Ont., listening to pitches from several teams both in person and via conference calls. He decided to sleep on it and come to a final decision Saturday. The Rangers were not one of the teams that showed up at the offices of Newport Sports Management, Inc. on Friday, but Larry Brooks of the New York Post tweeted that James Dolan, Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, personally spoke to Richards. The Rangers also held off from making any big deals throughout Friday in order to land Richards. New York signed Mike Rupp for three years and $4.5 million and re-signed Ruslan Fedotenko for one year and $1.4 million. Richards, who had 77 points in 72 games with Dallas last season, immediately becomes the Rangers' No. 1 center and will likely open training camp with Marian Gaborik on his right wing. New York's depth at center also looks much better with Richards now ahead of Artem Anisimov, Erik Christensen, Brian Boyle and Derek Stepan. Richards has 716 points in 772 games over his NHL career, which began in 2000-01 with the Lightning. He spent seven-plus seasons in Tampa Bay, winning the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy in 2004, before being traded to Dallas late in the 2007-08 season. He had 91 points in 80 games two seasons ago. Other teams believed to have made contract offers to Richards or at least discussed the possibility include Los Angeles, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Calgary. The Flames reportedly got in the race late, but made a strong push and had captain Jarome Iginla make a phone call to Richards to try to sell him on Calgary. Richards was believed to be intrigued in part because of his relationship with Flames GM Jay Feaster, who was the general manager in Tampa Bay for part of Richards' tenure with the Lightning. The Kings, Maple Leafs and Lightning showed up at Newport Sports Management, Inc. to talk to Richards and Morris about why their teams and cities would be his best destination. Los Angeles' contingent, including Governor Tim Leiweke, GM Dean Lombardi and coach Terry Murray, left feeling good about their 90-minute pitch to Richards. They reportedly showed Richards a video that included Wayne Gretzky and Kobe Bryant talking about the merits of being a professional athlete playing and living in Los Angeles. It obviously didn't persuade Richards enough to sign with the Kings, who now have to turn their full attention to re-signing defenseman Drew Doughty to a new contract. He is a restricted free agent and open to signing an offer sheet from another team. "This was a high priority for the Kings and a high priority for AEG and ownership," Leiweke told Rich Hammond of the L.A. Kings Insider blog on the Kings' website. "We spent a lot of time on it in the last few weeks. We were well-prepared. We were well-organized. We were well-briefed. He was shocked as to how much we knew about him." Lightning GM Steve Yzerman went in thinking he might be able to sell Richards on coming back to Tampa Bay, where he won the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy in 2004. Yzerman, though, told local reporters in Tampa later Friday evening that the Lightning pulled out of the Richards' sweepstakes because the gap between what Tampa Bay was offering and what Richards wanted was too wide. Similar to Lombardi, Yzerman now has to focus on re-signing Steven Stamkos, who, like Doughty, is a restricted free agent and open to signing an offer sheet from another club. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren admitted he spoke to Morris "a few times" Friday, but never sounded too optimistic he would get him signed. Philadelphia signed Jaromir Jagr and Max Talbot and also traded Kris Versteeg to Florida on Friday. Toronto reportedly sent Senior V.P. of Hockey Operations Dave Nonis, Assistant GM Claude Loiselle and Special Advisor Cliff Fletcher to the office with the Maple Leafs' pitch as GM Brian Burke is in Afghanistan visiting with Canadian troops. They were said to have met with Richards and Morris for an hour. The Leafs are in the market for a No. 1 center to play with Phil Kessel and Richards would have filled that void, but now Burke and Co. might have to go the trade route as none exist on the free agent market.

JULY 1ST FREE AGENT LIVE UPDATES
FREE AGENT LIVE UPDATES:
12:17: ....things are already happening. The Islanders have signed Kirill Kabanov to an ELC. I am a big fan of Kirill and I will write up a piece on this later. Bruins are interested in Jovo. Handzus was rumored to have signed with the Flyers, but I am hearing that is untrue at least not yet.
12:25:....Cam Barker has officially cleared waivers and is now an Unrestricted Free Agent. The Avalanche like I said last night, are very interested in Vokoun and have already begun negotiations with him
12:41:....Devils get Andy Greene signed to a big 4-Year Contract, I'm interested in seeing the money on that deal. Tampa has signed Brett Connolly to an ELC. It looks like Coburn has signed a 2-Year deal with the Flyers for about $4 Million per year. Handzus also is not close to signing with the Flyers as they haven't even heard from the Flyer brass as of now.
12:43:....Tampa signed Mathieu Garon to a two-year deal at $1.3 Million per year. He will be Roloson's back-up goalie. The Kings are currently "pitching" to Brad Richards, they are trying hard to get him in the fold. Also the Canucks are signed Andrew Ebbett to a one-year deal.
12:51:....Jamal Mayers signed with Chicago for one year at $550,000, and another former-Shark Ben Eager has signed with Edmonton. His deal is for three years with a cap-hit of $1.1 Million.
12:57:...Brett McLean signs with the Blackhawks to a 2 way deal at about $525K. Also the Panthers have signed Jose Theodore to a two-year deal worth about $1.5 million per year.
1:02:...Lots of teams going after Talbot, Darren Dreger has said about four teams are going hard for him.
1:06:....Stars sign Adam Pardy to a two year contract at $2 million per year
1:12:....Blackhawks make another signing and bring in Sean O'Donnell to a one-year deal worth $850K. The Flames re-signed the recently acquired defenseman Chris Butler to a 2 year deal at about $1.25 million per year. The Devils are supposedly trying really hard to get Joel Ward. One of the better guys on the market, Scottie Upshall has been signed and is going to the Panthers on 4-year deal worth $3.5 million per year. Mike Smith is headed to Phoenix on a two-year deal. The Capitals have signed Jeff Halpern to a one-year deal worth $825K.
1:23:...Matt D'Agostini signs with Blues for two years at $1.7 million per year. The Flyers have signed Jaromir Jagr for $3.3 Million for one year. Raffi Torres signed with the Coyotes for 2 years at $1.75 million per year. Mark Mancari signed by the Canucks to a one-way contract for $525,000 per year. The Coyotes have made another signing, adding Boyd Gordon on a two year deal worth $1.33 million per year. Jovanovski may be heading to the Flyers. The Stars have signed Radek Dvorak to a one year deal worth $1.5 million. Jan Hejda has signed a big 4-year contract with the Avalanche.
1:40:.... Ed Jovanovski at 35 years old signs a 4 year (woah! haha) deal with the Florida Panthers. Dallas is closing in on signing Tim Connolly.
1:44:....Flyers re-sign Jakub Voracek for one-year at $2.25 million. Dallas signs Vernon Fiddler for three years at $1.8 million per year. The money on the Hejda 4-year contract is $3.25 million per year and the money on the Jovo contract is $4.125 million per year. Flyers signed Andreas Lilja and Blackhawks signed Andrew Brunette, both on one-year deals. Supposedly the Islanders were very interested in Jovanovski and Upshall. Upshall offer from the Isles was 3 years at $3.5 million per year.
1:54:...Brunette money on the one-year deal is about $2 million.
1:57:..... Blues sign Cody Beach to an entry-level contract. The Panthers have signed Marcel Goc to a big three year deal, which is yet another signing by the Panthers who have been THE most aggressive team on the Free Agent market. As goalies are flying off the board, the remaining ones are receiving a ton of interest. One of those remaining goalies is Ty Conklin, who has quite a few teams after him. A minor signing, but a signing never-the-less, the Calgary Flames have signed Joe Piskula. The Islanders are very interested in Ville Leino and Simon Gagne, I would watch Gagne as a likely player they will land. The Avalanche are interested in Michael Rupp, but he has a few different teams to mull over. The Capitals have traded Semyon Varlamov to the Colorado Avalanche for a 1st round pick in 2012, and a 2nd round pick in 2012 or 2013. This will add even more drama to this day, but what I find even more amazing is that Varlamov may go to the KHL and the Avs paid a pretty big price for him. I am hoping that the Avalanche convince him to stay in the NHL. Hedberg is close to signing an extension with the Devils. There are a lot of teams going after Sean Bergenheim as its been rumored that around 8-9 teams have contacted him.
2:08:...Hedberg has signed a one-year extension with the Devils. Supposedly some teams are presenting offers to Brad Richards that have the max money possible ($12.8 Million) in the first and second years of the proposed contracts. If thats what ends up happening it will be one of the most controversial signings in the post-lockout NHL.
2:28:....Lots of interest in Zenon Konopka, who might end up getting a very nice deal because of an ongoing bidding war. Kaberle's agent is looking for about $4 million per year, but the Bruins are hesitant to give him that much. Supposedly the Oilers are closing in on a big trade, it will be interesting to see if it ends up going down. I have heard it may be with an eastern conference team. The Islanders are pretty interested in Erik Cole, but its still not close to being done. Max Talbot signs a big 5 year contract with the Flyers who are paying him $1.8 Million per year. Pens fans are going to be upset about that one, so even more drama to watch unfold. Mark Dekanich has been receiving a surprising amount of interest, he is someone to watch. According to some reports, Semyon Varlamov has come to an agreement with the Avalanche, but it still bothers me how much they payed for him. It comes out to two years at $2.75 million per year.
2:48:.....Bryan McCabe MAY be coming very close to signing a contract with the NY Islanders. The other NY team, has been interested in Michael Rupp and Anton Babchuk. Another goalie off the board as the Hurricanes have signed Brian Boucher to a 2 year deal worth about $950K per year.
3:01:.....The Hurricanes have re-signed Jiri Tlusty to one year contract worth $525K. Another goalie gets signed as the Canadiens have signed Peter Budaj to a two-year contract, where he will earn $1.15 million per year. I don't like Budaj as a back-up goalie to Price as he hasn't really proved enough to have an NHL job. The Rangers have signed big 4th line center, Mike Rupp to a big 3 year contract worth $1.5 million per year.
3:10:......The Red Wings have been looking for some defensemen, and they have added Mike Commodore on a one year deal worth $1 million. It also looks as though the Montreal Canadiens are closing in on Erik Cole, which will probably be happening today.
3:45:.....The Penguins have signed Steve Sullivan to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million, which in my opinion is a pretty solid deal if he stays healthy. The Capitals just made a pair of pretty big signings, as they locked up Joel Ward for 4 years at about $3 million per year and Roman Hamrlik for two years at $3.5 million per year. The Islanders also have made there first signing of the day as they have added Marty Reasoner for the next two years. He will get around $1.35 million per year which in my opinion is a very solid deal. He is one of the better bottom six forwards in the NHL. I was very upset that the Isles decided not to sign Konopka, but this signing makes it a bit better. Owen Nolan has received some interest after playing in a Swiss league last year. Erik Cole has indeed signed with the Habs, on a long-term deal. His contract is a 4-year deal for $4.5 million per year which is almost exactly what I expected him to get, money wise. The Oilers have signed Cam Barker for one year at about $2.25 million per year which is a little more expensive than I would like, but it could be a high reward type signing. The Oilers have also signed Darcy Hordicuk to a one-year deal worth $825K. Supposedly the Leafs have significant interest in Tim Connolly and are currently coming up with an offer. The Senators have gotten there back-up goalie for Craig Anderson in Alex Auld which will be for one year at about one million. The Stars have signed Michael Ryder for two years with a cap-hit of $3.5 million which in my opinion is a very solid for them. The Oilers are still not done so look for some breaking news from them soon.
4:08:.....Jake Dowell has signed with the Stars for one year at $800K which is a nice, under the radar type deal. Kris Versteeg has been traded again as the Panthers have acquired him for either a 2nd round pick in 2012 or in 2013 and San Jose's 2012 third round pick. The Panthers continue to add quality players today, one after another and this move is very solid for them. Both teams get what they want as the Flyers wanted some more cap space and all the Panthers have is cap space so this match was made in heaven as they say. Another signing thats a bit surprising is Benoit Pouliot joining the Boston Bruins one a one year deal worth $1.1 million. Rumors are going around that Ville Leino may be heading back to Detroit.
4:15:....Panthers have signed Nolan Yonkman, who will probably slot in as a depth defenseman. There has been another trade, the Oilers have acquired Andy Sutton from the Ducks for Kurtis Foster. I love this deal from the Oilers perspective. I am an Isles fan so I had the pleasure of watching Sutton when he was with the Islanders and I'll tell you, he could be an absolute beast. If he played that way with the Oilers, the Edmonton fans will adore him. He should fit in well. The Buffalo Sabres have signed Ville Leino to a big multi-year deal. The contract is a big 6 year deal with a cap-hit of about $4.5 million per year which is a lot more than I expected he would get. Terry Pegula definitely is not afraid to open his wallet.
4:41:.....The Canucks have signed Marco Sturm to a one year deal worth $2.25 million. If he stays healthy that could be a solid deal, but its a major concern. Another interesting signing was Alexei Ponikarovsky's move to the Carolina Hurricanes. The deal is only for one year at $1.5 million which is a very solid deal for the Canes. The Avalanche apparently were unable to come to terms with Vokoun as they have signed J.S. Giguere to take their goaltending role. The Caps have added another player for depth in Ryan Potulny on a two-year, two-way deal. The Blues have considerable interest in Jaime Langenbrunner and they should be a team to watch if you're looking for his destination. Another minor signing that was just announced was the addition of Jim Vandermeer to the Sharks defense. Another very interesting signing was the addition of Sheldon Souray to the Dallas Stars, on a one year deal worth about $1.65 million.
5:00:.......The Florida Panthers sign Tomas Fleischmann to a big four year contract with a cap-hit of $4.5 million. Its amazing how many players the Panthers are signing, its like they are getting everyone on the market.
5:07:.......The Boston Bruins surprisingly re-signed Anton Khudobin. He signed to go to the KHL, but it looks as though the Bruins convinced him to stay. He ended up going back to the Bruins on a two year deal.
5:24:.......Eric Belanger signs with the Edmonton Oilers on a three-year deal which will pay him $1.75 million per year. I love that signing for the Oilers as Belanger will be a good veteran presence and will provide a nice dimension to the Oilers line-up. Like I said earlier, Mark Dekanich had a lot of interest and the team that ultimately was able to sign him to a deal was the Blue Jackets. The Jackets also signed Aaron Johnson as a depth defenseman. The St. Louis Blues have signed Brian Elliot to a one-year, two-way deal which will be pretty important for Elliot's career. The Avalanche have been extremely active today and they just signed another solid player, in Chuck Kobasew. His deal is for two years, and around $1.25 per year.
Joensuu And Others Sign Overseas
Jesse Joensuu Signs In Swedish Elite League
Jesse Joensuu was extended a qualifying offer by the Islanders, but it looks as though he will be leaving North America and signing in Sweden. Joensuu has agreed to a two-year contract with HV71 of the Swedish Elite League. Despite him leaving the NHL, the Isles will still hold his rights because of that qualifying offer. Joensuu was unimpressive in most of his Islander tenure, and he was a bit in "my doghouse" throughout last season. Its no major loss for the Islanders....actually its not a loss at all. All that comes from this is that now the Islanders will have to find some scoring for Bridgeport.
