"The New York Islanders announced today that they have agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level contract with Kirill Kabanov. He set career high numbers this past season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, splitting the year with the Moncton Wildcats and the Lewiston MAINEiacs. In 39 total games, the 18-year-old forward scored 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points. He also played 15 QMJHL playoff games, averaging over a point a game with 20 (8 goals and twelve assists). The Moscow, Russia native was named one of the three finalists for the league’s Humanitarian Player of the Year for his contributions to the Lewiston/Auburn community. Kabanov played for Moncton during the 2009-10 season, recording 23 points (10 goals and 13 assists) in 22 games. Internationally, Kabanov has represented Russia at the 2009 Under-18 World Junior Championships, tallying 11 points (four goals and seven assists) in seven games to help his country win a silver medal. Kabanov, selected in the third round (65th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, also played in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and the 5 Nations Under-18 Tournament."
PattyB Thoughts:
Kirill Kabanov has a ton of skill and in the playoffs with Lewiston, he was able to display that. He carried the club on his shoulders deep into the playoffs and earned the respect of many people in the hockey world. He is a good kid that truly is one of the nicest hockey players I have met. He has a very out-going, fun personality which is enjoyable to be around. He has learned in the past year or so when he should and should not be letting that fun side of him show itself as he has matured immensely. At 18 years old, he is one of the youngest Islanders signed to an entry level contract and I expect him to be sent back to the "Q" just because at his age he can only play in the NHL or in the QMJHL. I don't believe he is ready for the NHL which means he would have to play juniors.
