Detroit Red Wings Sign Xavier Ouellet To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract |
D. Xavier Ouellet Age: 18 Height: 6-0 Weight: 176 Drafted: Detroit Red Wings in the 2nd round (48th overall) in 2011. 2011-12 Statistics: Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL): 63 GP | 21 G | 39 A | 60 PTS | 67 PIM CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -Born in France. -Named to the 2009-10 QMJHL All-Rookie Team. -Was the captain of the Armada this season. |
Thoughts:
Yesterday, the Detroit Red Wings announced the signing of eighteen-year old Xavier Ouellet to a three-year entry level contract. Ouellet was drafted by Detroit in the second round of last years draft. Since that time, the french-born Ouellet, has been terrific. After his club — the MontrĂ©al Juniors (QMJHL) — were relocated to Boisbriand, he was given a much larger role on the team. Immediately he was handed the captaincy, and top-pairing minutes. He has been up to the challenge all season and has produced tremendously at both ends of the ice. His sixty points led all Blainville-Boisbriand defensemen, and was third-most of all QMJHL defensemen.
Ouellet plays a very polished game at both ends of the ice. When he is in possession of the puck, whether its in his own end or in the offensive zone, he rarely ever will make a wrong decision with the puck. As is the case with most good defenseman, his hockey sense is tremendous. That above average hockey sense really does a lot for him as it enables him to be responsible and positionally sound in his own end, while still being an active puck-mover. He also does a good job at reading the play and making split-second decisions to avoid any problematic situations. One of the biggest things about his game however, is his ability to break the puck out and create offensive opportunities. He can make some terrific first passes to create odd-man rushes or skate the puck up himself if the situation asks for it. There is no better player in the QMJHL when it comes to transitioning the puck from defense to offense, and I believe the Red Wings realize how valuable of an asset that really is.
He has shown a lot this season, but he definitely needs a bit more time. I think he'll be back in the QMJHL next season, but the following year he will be given every opportunity to make the pro-club out of camp. With that said, the Red Wings usually opt to be more patient with their prospects so I could see him getting a few years in the AHL first.

Detroit Red Wings Sign Ryan Sproul To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract |
D. Ryan Sproul Age: 19 Height: 6-4 Weight: 176 Drafted: Detroit Red Wings in the 2nd round (55th overall) in 2011. 2011-12 Statistics: Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL): 61GP | 23 G | 31 A | 54 PTS | 53 PIM CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -Named to the 2010-11 OHL Second All-Rookie Team -Originally was going to play in the NCAA, but chose OHL instead. |
Thoughts:
Along with Xavier Ouellet, the Detroit Red Wings announced the signing of another prospect in defenseman, Ryan Sproul. Signed to the typical three-year entry level contract, Sproul will report to Grand Rapids (Red Wings AHL Affiliate) on an Amateur Try-Out. The Red Wings drafted Sproul in the second round of last year's draft.
Ryan Sproul has more upside than most other Red Wing prospects, but he also has just as much risk attached to him as well. Currently his game seems to revolve around his offensive talent. His shot seems to be one of his biggest assets and from the point on the power play, it is deadly. He also does a very nice job at starting a rush. A common theme amongst Red Wing prospects is good hockey smarts, and that holds true for Sproul. He see's the ice extremely well and can thread the needle from the point with ease. His offensive game looks to be NHL caliber already, but defensively he has a lot of flaws. At 6-4, you'd expect that he'd be willing to use his body, but he has shown almost no physicality. He also needs to add some muscle to his large and skinny frame. He will need a lot of time to refine his game at both ends of the rink, but he could definitely turn out to be a fantastic NHL defenseman.
He needs a lot more time at lower levels. I think one more season in the OHL wouldn't hurt and then maybe some time in the AHL.

Boston Bruins Sign Torey Krug To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract |
D. Torey Krug Age: 20 Height: 5-9 Weight: 174 Drafted: Undrafted 2011-12 Statistics: Michigan State University (NCAA): 38 GP | 12 G | 22 A | 34 PTS | 51 PIM CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -Was drafted in the OHL, but chose NCAA path. -Named to the 2009-10 NCAA (CCHA) All-Rookie Team. -Named the 2010-11 NCAA (CCHA) Best Offensive Defenseman. -Named to the 2010-11 NCAA (CCHA) First All-Star Team. -Most points of any NCAA (CCHA) defenseman for the 2010-11 season. -Named captain of Michigan State for the 2011-12 season. -Named the 2011-12 NCAA (CCHA) Best Offensive Defenseman. -Named to the 2011-12 NCAA (CCHA) First All-Star Team. -Named the 2011-12 NCAA (CCHA) Player Of The Year. -Named a finalist for the 2011-12 NCAA "Hobey Baker Award". |
Thoughts:
I guess the rich just get richer…the Boston Bruins announced the signing of "Hobey Baker" finalist, Torey Krug. The contract — a three-year Entry Level Contract — is littered with various bonuses, but it has been reported that a handful of teams (including the Islanders) had similar, if-not better deals offered. With that being said, the Bruins are one of the more attractive teams for players in the NHL right now, and as you'll see they did everything they could to convince him.
People who haven't watched Torey Krug play always seem to think that he cannot be a good player because of his size, but those who have seen him play would tell the naysayers that they're crazy. Krug is able to compensate for his lack of size with incredible hockey sense and on-ice vision. He straight up knows how to play the game, and he has the talent to pull off what ever he wants to do. Offensively, he is extremely effective. He moves the puck around the offensive zone very well, and has a good enough shot to be a threat in that regard as well. He is a very talented and quick skater which really helps him find all the possible options on a breakout. In my opinion, he has all the makings of a terrific power play QB at the NHL level.
In his own end, Krug is no slouch either. He is able to get his stick in the passing lanes and really cover a lot of ground despite his lack of size. He tries his absolute hardest to battle in the corners and in front of the net, and he isn't afraid to get knocked around a bit. Along with his 'team-first' attitude, he frequently will sacrifice his body to block a shot. He gives every ounce of effort he can and it really amazes me how much he gets out of his small frame.
The Bruins fell in love with Krug early in the season, and in the past few weeks have been in hot pursuit of his services. They wanted him so badly that they agreed to burn the first year of his three year contract off by having him join the Bruins NHL roster this season instead of having him sign with Providence on an ATO to finish out the year with the ELC kicking in next season, which is the case with most college UFA signings.
It'll be interesting to see how his game translates directly to the NHL, but the Bruins feel that this kid is going to be something special for them down the line.

Florida Panthers Sign Drew Shore To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract |
C. Drew Shore Age: 21 Height: 6-2 Weight: 194 Drafted: Florida Panthers in the 2nd round (44th overall) in 2009. 2011-12 Statistics: University Of Denver (NCAA): 42 GP | 22 G | 31 A | 53 PTS | 45 PIM CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -Named captain of University of Denver for 2011-12 season. -Nearly a PPG player in his NCAA career (0.96). -Named to the 2010-11 NCAA (WCHA) All-Academic Team. -Named to the 2010-11 NCAA (WCHA) Second All-Star Team. -Named to the 2011-12 NCAA (WCHA) All-Academic Team. -Named to the 2011-12 NCAA (WCHA) Second All-Star Team. |
Thoughts:
This afternoon Drew Shore's agent announced that his client (Shore) has signed a three-year entry level contract with the Florida Panthers. Shore was drafted by the Panthers in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft. Since then, he has been playing with the University of Denver where he has become one of the best players in college hockey.
It was widely believed that Shore would return to Denver for his senior year to play with his two brothers, but because he decided to turn pro that will not happen. Shore has a very impressive skill-set, one in which I believe fits the pro game perfectly. He is responsible at both ends of the rink, and is willing to provide what ever his team needs. He is solid on both special teams and has the versatility to switch back in forth between the PK & PP. He plays a good strong game, and he has a nose for the net.
I like his potential which I believe is somewhere in the vicinity of a top-six forward, but more than likely as a 2nd liner.

Dallas Stars Sign Alex Chiasson To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract |
RW. Alex Chiasson Age: 21 Height: 6-3 Weight: 203 Drafted: Dallas Stars in the 2nd round (38th overall) in 2009. 2011-12 Statistics: Boston University (NCAA): 38 GP | 15 G | 31 A | 46 PTS | 67 PIM CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -Led Boston University in points for the 2011-12 season. |
Thoughts:
The Dallas Stars have signed twenty-one year old Alex Chiasson to a three-year entry level contract. Chiasson was drafted by the Stars in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft.
Alex Chiasson has really developed into an impressive player during his time at Boston University. His talent as a power forward has flourished and he is able to use his size effectively. Sometimes he can be a little undisciplined, but as he matures that will be a thing of the past. He has really found his scoring touch and is always willing to battle around the net. He also is responsible in his own end, and will back-check just as hard as he forechecked. His intensity and work-ethic will be a huge assets for him once he makes the jump to pro hockey as I'm sure he will be able to match the needed intensity level. He has a lot of upside, and I don't believe its too much of a stretch to say he could push to make a spot on the Stars out of training camp next season.
He will join the Texas Stars, the Dallas Stars' AHL Affiliate, on an Amateur Try-Out for the rest of the season.
