Calgary Flames Sign David Eddy To A Two-Year Entry Level Contract |
F. David Eddy Age: 22 Height: 6-0 Weight: 187 Drafted: Undrafted 2011-12 Statistics: St.Cloud State University (NCAA): 39 GP | 9 G | 16 A | 25 PTS | 52 PIM CONTRACT: Two-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -Completed his junior year, but chose to turn pro. |
Thoughts:
The Calgary Flames have been long rumored to be heavily involved in this year's college free agent market as a way to re-stock their system. Their first addition was announced last night as they signed twenty-two year old David Eddy. The Calgary Flames identified Eddy early in the year as a player that they'd like to have in their organization.
David Eddy played the past three seasons with St. Cloud State University and has been a consistent performer during that time. He doesn't have a ton of offensive talent, but he plays a good energetic game. He is very physical for his size, and is always willing to battle in front of the net and in the corners. Naturally as a gritty player he draws penalties and agitates opponents very well. He has decent vision in the offensive zone, but at the NHL level it will be, at best, slightly above average.
He will probably never be a top-six forward at the NHL level, but it is possible that he could end up as a solid bottom-six energy forward. At worst he will be an AHL agitator that could sometimes step in at the NHL level. In my opinion, he has already reached his upside and his talent level right now is where he'll always be.

Detroit Red Wings Sign Riley Sheahan To A Three-Year Entry Level Contract |
C. Riley Sheahan Age: 20 Height: 6-2 Weight: 212 Drafted: Detroit Red Wings in the 1st round (21st overall) in 2010. 2011-12 Statistics: University of Notre Dame (NCAA): 37 GP | 9 G | 16 A | 25 PTS | 24 PIM CONTRACT: Three-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -Every year he's been in Notre Dame his point total has increased. |
Thoughts:
Yesterday the Grand Rapids Griffins announced that Sheahan was on his way to join their team on an Amateur Try-Out. Once a player gets time in a pro-league such as the AHL, they cannot return to play in the NCAA which definitely led us to believe that an entry-level contract was imminent. That was confirmed this evening as the Red Wings announced that they have signed him to a three-year entry level contract.
Riley Sheahan was drafted in 2010 by the Red Wings and since then his 'stock' has stayed pretty even. He is a responsible, two-way forward that uses his speed to back check effectively. He is terrific defensively which is helped along by his effective use of his big body. His physical play is overwhelming for the opposition. He throws huge hits, battles along the boards, and drives hard to the net. In the offensive zone he has the instincts to be a highly effective point producer at the pro level. His shot is solid, but he'll get many of his goals by standing in front of the net and battling for dirty goals. Throughout his time with Notre Dame he has been a player that can help in every situation. At the peak of his NHL career I fully expect him to be on the Red Wing's top penalty kill unit and power play unit. I've heard him characterized as a two-way forward, power forward, and shut-down center. I mean if that doesn't show a player's amazing versatility and all-around game then I don't know what does.
He will be a very good player at the National Hockey League level, but I think he is going to spend a large portion of time in the American Hockey League. The Red Wings seem to always take their time with their prospects, and for a guy like Sheahan I wouldn't be surprised if they give him a few years in the minors. If they develop him right he may turn out to be one heck of a hockey player.

Vancouver Canucks Sign Joe Cannata To A Two-Year Entry Level Contract |
G. Joe Cannata Age: 22 Height: 6-1 Weight: 205 Drafted: Vancouver Canucks in the 6th round (173rd overall) in 2009. 2011-12 Statistics: Merrimack College (NCAA): 36 GP | 2.18 GAA | 0.925 SV % CONTRACT: Two-Year Entry-Level Contract (ELC) Important Facts: -In 2007-08, won the bronze medal for the USA WJC-U18 Team -Played all four years with Merrimack College -Named to the 2011-12 NCAA (Hockey East) First All-Star Team -Merrimack's all-time leader in: --wins --games played --minutes played --saves --GAA --save % |
Thoughts:
The Vancouver Canucks have signed goaltender Joe Cannata to a two-year entry level contract. Cannata was drafted in the sixth-round of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Canucks.
This year Cannata almost singlehandedly carried Merrimack College to a spot in the NCAA Tournament. One of his big strengths is his mental toughness. He is not phased when he lets up a goal, or has a rough game. Because of that, he puts out very consistent efforts and will play at the same level all year long. Along with his mental strength, he is loaded with confidence. He doesn't second guess himself and he fully believes in his abilities. He is extremely attentive and when combined with his good positional awareness, it makes for a goaltender that rarely gets caught in the wrong place. As you can tell from the past comments, a lot of his success stems from mental abilities. However, he does posses great flexibility and athleticism.
I think he has all the makings of an NHL starting goaltender. It will take time, but he definitely has the potential. It really is amazing to me that the Canucks have such an impressive group of talented goaltenders and Cannata falls into that group. He will join the Chicago Wolves and remain there until the end of the AHL regular season. At that time he will then go back to Marrimack to get his degree in business administration.
