Yesterday, Bob McKenzie reported that the Boston Bruins have come to terms on an extension with Shawn Thornton. The deal is for the next two seasons and will pay Thornton $1,100,000 per year. The thirty-four year old forward is currently playing in his fifth straight season with the Boston Bruins.
In his time with Boston, Shawn Thornton has become one of the best fourth-line players in the National Hockey League. His leadership and incredible work-ethic have been huge proponents to the success of the Boston Bruins. In the locker room he has been as important as any Boston Bruin. To add to his 'team-first' mentality he consistently will sacrifice his body for the benefit of his hockey club. Whether that means he has to battle along the boards, take a beating in front of the net, or drop the gloves in the defense of a teammate, he is always ready and willing. He has been particularly active in the fighting category this season with a league leading nineteen fighting majors. According to Hockeyfights.com, he has been very successful in those nineteen fights with a record of twelve wins, four losses, and three draws. What makes him even more appealing to the Bruins is that he can also play the game. With twelve points this season and a decent two way game, he provides a lot more than just hard work and fisticuffs.
The fact that they are only paying Thornton $1,100,000 per season, really makes this is a terrific move for the Bruins. Thornton is a significant piece of their organization right now, and to get him under contract for two more years at this price is very good news especially when you consider that had he went to free agency he would have been able to get a lot more money.
