Analysis:
It's been a long time since I've witnessed a three-way trade made in the National Hockey League, but today we've finally seen one materialize. In a surprise move the Tampa Bay Lightning traded Steve Downie to the Colorado Avalanche in-exchange for Kyle Quincey. The Lightning then moved Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings for their 1st-round draft pick in 2012 and prospect Sebastien Piche.

The Colorado Avalanche were involved in the first part of this three-way trade. They traded Kyle Quincey to the Tampa Bay Lightning (who then went to Detroit) in-exchange for Steve Downie. The twenty-four year old Downie, will be expected to provide some energy and spark to the Avalanche line-up. In acquiring Downie they don't only add to their grit, but they improve their top-nine forward group. He is a competent 2nd/3rd line forward that is capable of putting up 35-45 points in a season, while being one of the better agitators in the NHL. As for what the Avs forfeited in this trade, they do let go of a top-four defenseman in Quincey. Although he is a valuable player, they believe that young prospects like Stefan Elliott or Tyson Barrie will be more than capable of filling Quincey's spot now and in the future. All-in-all the Avalanche fix a major weakness in their system by adding a new physical dimension, while moving someone that they believed was expendable.

The other team that was involved in this trade was the Detroit Red Wings. Heading towards the deadline the Red Wings have established themselves as real Stanley Cup contenders, but Detroit GM Ken Holland felt that they still needed to make some additions. Today they acquired Kyle Quincey, a defenseman that they originally drafted, from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Quincey will excel as a No. 4-6 defenseman down the stretch this season for the Red Wings and because he is a RFA at the end of the season, he will be a nice piece in the future for Detroit as a top-four defenseman. Although Detroit did have to move their first-round pick in the upcoming draft and a marginal prospect, it is very impressive that they didn't have to sacrifice any piece of their roster in this transaction. This was a great addition for the Red Wings, who now have almost no weaknesses as the playoffs approach.

The Tampa Bay Lightning were the most active club in the NHL today as they were the main team behind this three-way swap. They first traded Steve Downie to the Avalanche for Kyle Quincey. Downie was actually very well-liked by some of his teammates (mainly Steven Stamkos), but his bad discipline and difficult coach-ability made him more of a liability for the Lightning. Once they acquired Quincey they promptly traded him to the Detroit Red Wings for a first-round draft pick and a prospect. The first-rounder is in the upcoming draft, and is the Red Wings' own pick thus it will most likely be in the later part of the first-round. The prospect that was included was defenseman Sebastien Piche, who at twenty-four years old is currently playing his first full season in the American Hockey League. As of right now he doesn't really look like a legitimate NHL prospect, but who knows. I think the big point of this transaction is that Lightning GM Steve Yzerman was hoping to turn Steve Downie into a first-round draft pick, and after some shrewd moves he was able to accomplish that.

With the NHL trade deadline in 6 days, the magnitude of trades has begun to increase and this particular one was definitely exciting. This three-way trade was one of the more even all-around trades I've seen in a long time. The Red Wings did a classic job of 'buying' using picks and prospects to acquire an established NHL player for the playoff run, while on the other side of the spectrum the Lightning were 'selling' as they moved a veteran player for picks and prospects by turning forward Steve Downie into a first-round draft pick and middle-of-the-road prospect in Sebastien Piche. Not on either side of the 'buying' or 'selling' category was the Avalanche who were able to fix a weakness by dealing from a strength in their move of Kyle Quincey for Steve Downie.
