Oilers Re-Sign Sutton

Andy Sutton Signs One-Year Extension With Oilers
General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with defenceman Andy Sutton on a one-year contract extension. Sutton, 36, has appeared in 33 games with the Oilers this season, collecting three goals and six assists along with 56 penalty minutes. The 6’6”, 245-pound rearguard was acquired on July 1, 2011 from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Kurtis Foster. In 657 career NHL games, the London, Ontario native has 149 points (38G, 111A) and 1,161 penalty minutes. He has also played for the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Atlanta Thrashers, New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators. Sutton, who was undrafted, played four seasons with the NCAA's Michigan Tech, collecting 56 points (22G, 34A) in 121 games, including 40 points in 38 games in his final year.

Reaction:
Andy Sutton, believe it or not, was one of the top five players available heading towards the deadline, and with this signing the defense market continues to shrink almost daily. For the people involved I believe this signing works out very well for both sides.

Andy Sutton is the type of big bodied defenseman that teams value especially clubs that are younger and more vulnerable. Unfortunately for the Oilers (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) they fall into that category which makes Sutton a great fit with them. This season there've been a few times that he's been a bit overly physical, but in my opinion that is not always a bad thing. His physicality forces his opponents to play a more timid game especially when they are moving through the neutral zone into Sutton's defensive end. His positive affect on the Oilers is shown by his impressive plus/minus of plus-2 which happens to lead all Oilers defensemen. As a top-four defenseman and veteran presence for their club, its a nice deal for the Oilers.
