Hurricanes Add Tomas Kaberle To An Already Impressive Top-Four Defensive Corps
TSN Press Release Tomas Kaberle has signed a three-year, $12.75 million deal to play for the Carolina Hurricanes. Kaberle had been the longest tenured member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, before being dealt at the trade deadline to the Boston Bruins. He helped Boston win their first Stanley Cup since 1971-72. "Tomas is one of the top puck-moving defencemen in the NHL and (a) power-play specialist," Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said in a release. "He has had a good career and is now a Stanley Cup champion. We welcome him to Carolina and look forward to his contributions to the Hurricanes." He had four goals and 43 assists between the two teams last season, and played all 82 games. The 33-year-old from the Czech Republic has 84 goals and 445 assists in 902 career games.
PattyB Thoughts:
This is an incredibly interesting free agent signing for the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes have done a very solid job this off-season at retaining their valuable players and sprinkling in other outside ones. This addition is probably their biggest outside acquisition for them which is mainly due to his notoriety and high-end puck moving ability. He is definitely a bit overrated, but there is no way anyone can deny that he is an effective top four defenseman who can QB a power play very well. Kaberle will be getting $4.25 million per year for the next three years which may be a bit of an overpayment, but he should fit in well with this Carolina team.
