To Winnipeg: Eric Fehr |
To Washington: 4th Round Pick In 2012 Danick Paquette |
Review:
I love this move for the Jets...not so much for the Capitals. First and foremost, lets analyze the reasoning behind this acquisition from the Jets perspective. They seem to be targeting all locally born players, mainly due to the common conception amongst players that Winnipeg is not an ideal place to live, but by adding players who grew up around that area it eliminates that feeling in the locker room. That, along with the fact that he is a good player, makes for a great player to target. Fehr is only twenty-five years old, and has established himself as a top-six winger. He uses his impressive 6'4", 212 pound, frame to get to the areas on the ice where he can put points on the board. He will strive in the Jets system, and the fact that they didn't have to pay a huge sum of assets makes this a terrific move. They sent a 4th round pick and Danick Paquette to the Caps for Fehr. The 4th Rounder is in next year's draft and although it may not be a very high pick, it will be useful come trade deadline time when the Caps look to add a rental for the playoffs. The prospect, Danick Paquette, doesn't have much high-end potential, but he may make it as a role player. He does a good job agitating and getting in opponents faces. The real reason for this move from the Capitals perspective is for clearing some cap space. Despite that, I really believe they should have held out a bit longer until they got a better offer because Fehr is much more valuable than a 4th rounder and a mediocre prospect.
Short-Term Winner: Jets, they get the best player without a doubt and don't give up much for him.
Long-Term Winner: Jets again, I guarantee that Fehr will be twice the player Paquette ever becomes and the draft pick is, as always, a crap shoot.
