Short-Term Status:
He has outgrown the OHL and next season I believe he will take a similar route to what was done with Travis Hamonic. He will start the year in Bridgeport and if he plays well enough, they will give him a few games up with the big club just to see how he is able to handle the workload. Ideally, he will spend most, if not all, of next season down in the AHL.Long-Term Status:
I am very excited about Calvin de Haan and I think once casual Islanders fans watch him, they will be too. He see's the game incredibly well and moves the puck terrifically. He has the potential to be a top-tier NHL Power Play Quarterback. Along with that, I believe he has what it takes to be a top pairing defenseman for the Islanders sometime in the future. I am so confident he has star power in him that I'll say in the absolute worst case scenario he still would be a 2nd pairing (top 4) defenseman for the Islanders.

Review:
This season was a successful one for the nineteen year old de Haan as he was able to quiet most, if not all, of his critics. One of the concern's that were being shared by myself and others, was the worry that he may be too brittle and injury prone but, he was able to withstand the grind for most of this year as he played 55 games which was 21 games more than that of the 2009-10 season. Along with the first issue that fans had been worried about with de Haan, many were also concerned with his lack of size and bulk but, once again Calvin has been able to quiet those concerns. According to this article, he has grown an inch and added 5 pounds to his frame which means he went from being 6 feet tall and 184 pounds at the beginning of the year to 6 foot 1, and 189 pounds at the end. Although to some that may seem minimal, in hockey a player gaining that size is a big, big difference. Regarding his play this year, some fans were unhappy with his point totals and to those people I have one thing to say....STOP looking on hockeydb, looking at stats and thinking you know the player. To truly understand his quality of play, you had to have watched him. Now in my opinion, I will admit I expected a few more than his 6 goals (which were still the most goals by any defenseman on the Generals) but 42 assists is not something to ignore. It was the 2nd most assists of anyone on his team, and the most by any defensemen on his team. What I was most impressed with was his improvement in his own zone. He looked extremely calm and made very smart plays, time after time. In his own zone, he reminds me very much of Andrew MacDonald, in the fact that he is always able to find a way to get his stick into passing lanes and is very good at out smarting the opposing forwards without having to out muscle them. In the offensive zone, he plays a smooth game that believe it or not makes me feel like I am back as a little kid watching Kenny Jonsson on the blue-line. Throughout the season, he played consistently and did a good job as captain of the Generals. Another impressive aspect of the season was his play-off performance in which he put up 12 points through 10 games which was tied for 2nd of anyone on the Generals.Season Grade (A+ to F-): B+
It was a very good year for Calvin and was a good indication that he is ready to play for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers next season. His point totals are the reason he wasn't able to bump himself up to an A but, his every other aspect of his play was perfect.
