D. Milan Jurcina
Date of birth: June 7, 1983 (2010-11 Season Age: 27)
Season Grade (A+ to F-): B+
His actual play was impressive and really encouraging but, because of his large amount of injuries his grade was brought down. During the time he played, I would probably say that this season was the best, performance wise, of his career. He looked solid on both sides of the puck, hit very effectively and showed much more emotion in his game than year's past.
Date of birth: June 7, 1983 (2010-11 Season Age: 27)
Place of birth: Liptovsky Mikulas, Czech
Height: 6-4
Weight: 236
Shooting Hand: Right
NHL Season: 5th NHL Season
Drafted: 8th Round Pick (241st Overall) in the 01' Draft by the Bruins
Acquired: Signed as a Free Agent In 2010
2010-11 Season Stats:
New York Islanders NHL: GP: 46 G: 4 A: 13 P: 17 PIM: 30
Short-Term Status:
Next season Milan Jurcina will be another important piece to this Islanders club. He is one of the few defensemen the Isles have under contract that bring size to the table. When Milan was injured this season, the lack of size on the back-end was a glaring weakness.
Long-Term Status:
Although the Isles signed him to only a one-year extension, I would not be surprised if he ended up having a long stay on the Island. He fits the team well and has played the best hockey of his career. If I'm right and he does stay here for an extended amount of time, I would venture to say that it would probably be as just a bottom-pairing defenseman that adds size.

Review:
I was very impressed with Milan Jurcina this season and apparently, judging from the early contract extension, so were the Islanders. For the first time in his career, he finally used his size the way coaches and fans alike have been wanting him to. He was not afraid to throw his body around, as shown by the 125 hits he was credited for. Those 125 hits were the 2nd most of any Islander and the most by any Islander defensemen. The fact that he improved his number of hits from last season's 88 to 125 is very encouraging. Another aspect of his play that impressed me was his shot from the point. Although it was often times wide, when it hit the night it almost always ended up producing a scoring chance if not a goal. It's incredibly hard and seems to always result in a juicy rebound. That aspect of his play resulted in him seeing some time on the Power Play. Now although there were many positive things that Milan Jurcina did this year, there was one negative that can't be ignored. His injury issue was just as bad as advertised as he missed a total of 36 games from various medical ailments. What I find even more troubling about it is that it was not just one injury that forced him out, he missed 18 games because of his hamstring, 7 games from an "upper body" injury, 5 games from a Groin injury, and his latest, a hip flexer injury that kept him out the final 6 games of the season. He seemingly injured every part of his body at sometime this season and was not able to play a long stretch of games without it being interupted due to injury. The injuries he suffered hurt the Isles and really through the defense off kilter. Something very interesting to look at is how incredibly different the Isles' record is when he is healthy compared to when he's out of the line-up. As of right now (April 8th, before the Penguins-Isles game), when Milan Jurcina is in the Islanders line-up their record is 24-16-6 yet when he is missing from the line-up they have gone an awful, 6-22-6. That stat is one of the most jaw dropping I have seen and definitely supports Milan as being an important member of the team.
