THE ISLANDERS AND GARTH SNOW, TOLL EVGENI NABOKOV'S CONTRACT
According to Katie Strang, the New York Islanders will toll the contract of Russian goalie, Evgeni Nabokov. Nabokov, who the Isles claimed off of waivers from Detroit, refused to fulfill his one-year contract and was suspended without pay by the Islanders. The Isles had the choice to let him become a free agent on July 1st, or they could "toll" the one-year contract. That would mean that the one-year Nabokov owed to the Islanders would be pushed over to next year. If he refuses again, the Isles will hold his rights until he plays out his year with the club or is traded to another franchise. Garth Snow, who received some criticism for his original claim of Nabokov, is sure to be under scrutiny by the media for this decision. In my opinion, I believe this is a ballsy and shrewd move. It may not be popular amongst some but it will help the Isles franchise in some way. Now I don't believe the Isles expect or even want Evgeni Nabokov to play for their club. What this move does, is it provides the Isles with another asset. Come draft time if a team needs a goalie, the Islanders can trade Nabokov's rights. It may not bring them a huge return but getting a "free" mid to late round draft pick is great asset management. It will be very interesting to see what ends up happening with Nabokov during this off-season because I can assure you one thing, he will not be putting on Isles orange and blue in the future.
