D. Mark Eaton
Date of birth: May, 6th 1977 (2010-11 Season Age: 33)
Place of birth: Wilmington, DE, USA
Height: 6-2
Weight: 204
Shooting Hand: Left
NHL Season: 10th NHL Season
Drafted: Undrafted (Signed as a College Free Agent by Flyers)
Acquired: Signed as a Free Agent In 2010
2010-11 Season Stats:
New York Islanders NHL: GP: 34 G: 0 A: 3 P: 3 PIM: 8
Short-Term Status: Next season he will be expected to provide a calming force in the Isles' own zone. His defensive play is above-average and his experience will be useful due to the over-whelming amount of young defensemen the Isles will be having in their top 6 next season. He will probably retain his position as Assistant Captain next season.
Long-Term Status: He was given a two-year contract last July, so next season will be the last one on the current deal. I would be surprised if he was retained, just for the pure fact that there are a lot of young defensemen in the Isles organization that are starting come closer and closer to being NHL-ready.

Review:
Before he went down with a season ending injury he was pretty solid. Coming into this season, I was not sure what to expect from Eaton. Penguin fans seemed to rave about him yet I have not heard much media attention. Right off the bat, I knew exactly why that was. My uncle always tell's me, it's a good thing when you don't notice a defenseman and Mark Eaton is the absolute epitome of that. Every game he played in, he was low-key but, usually, got the job done. The only problem with his very quiet yet solid play style is when he was forced to carry a larger than normal workload, he looked like he was a bit overwhelmed. During the Isles long losing streak, there were a few games that it seemed like he couldn't handle facing other team's top lines and getting top-4 minutes. But when he was comfortable and played in the appropriate situation's, he was very solid for this club.
Season Grade (A+ to F-): C+
Although I was satisfied with his actual play and purely on that would've probably given a B, his injury definitely hurt it (no pun intended)...Eaton is close to being 34 years old and has one more year left on his contract, losing close to a full year to injury at this point in his career is devastating.
