2010-11 Season Stats:
New York Islanders NHL: GP: 20  G: 0  A: 3  P: 3 PIM: 8

Short-Term Status:
Mottau's short-term future is hard to predict. If he gets healthy, he will probably take over on the bottom pair but there is an outside possibility that with the rest of the defense healthy he might end up just outside the top 6. If that ends up being the case he would be spending some time in the press box until an injury enables him to see some playing time.

Long-Term Status:
After next season his contract with the Isles will be finished, and I can confidently say he will not be brought back. It's not that he has been bad, its just he is a very average player and with so many young defensemen coming up, he does not fit into the Isles plan's.

Review:
Mike Mottau was held to only 20 games this season due to injury and in those 20 games he was very "blah". I was not overly impressed yet I was not unimpressed, if that makes any sense. He played, like Mark Eaton, a very quiet styled game. One thing that I did find very encouraging about his play was his ability to effectively break the puck out of his own zone with a lot of speed and smarts. His first pass was terrific and this aspect of his game often went unnoticed. The injury was definitely disappointing but it will be interesting to see how he is used and how he plays next season in his final year of his two-year contract.

Season Grade (A+ to F-)
: C

I believe it might even be appropriate to give him an incomplete as it really was not enough of a scope to accurately grade but, if I had to I would give him a C because he did have some good moments but he overall was not anything special, just average.
