Jason Gregoire 2010-11 SEASON REVIEW:

Jason Gregoire

Date of birth: February 24, 1989 (2010-11 Season Age: 21/22)
Place of birth: Winnipeg, Man., Canada
Height: 6'1
Weight: 196
Shooting Hand: Left
NCAA Season: 3rd NCAA Season (Junior Year)
Drafted: Islanders In The 3rd Round (76th Overall) Of The 2007 Draft
Acquired: Originally Drafted By The NY Islanders

2010-11 Season Stats:
University Of North Dakota   WCHA:  GP: 35  G: 25  A: 18  P: 43  PIM: 8

Short-Term Status:
Because he decided to leave the University of North Dakota, the Islanders have 30 days to sign him or he becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent. So next season he will either be playing in the Islanders organization (Isles or Sound Tigers), or he will become a member of another NHL club.

Long-Term Status:
He's going to be an NHL'er, that I can pretty much guarantee, but what we are yet to find out is what NHL team will he be playing for. If the Islanders end up getting him, in the next few years, I would definitely see him being a good top-six winger for this club.

Contract Status:
He has no NHL contract as of May 20, 2011

Review:
Jason Gregoire has had a terrific collegiate career with UND and this year was no different. In just 35 games he put up 25 goals and 18 assists for 43 points. His 25 goals were the 2nd most of anyone on the UND team despite playing 9 games less than both of the players that finished with the most and 3rd most goals on his team. Along with his impressive goal scoring, and point totals, he has a solid two-way ability that was displayed by his +25 plus/minus rating, which was 2nd best of anyone on his team. Now looking at these stats and this impressive year, Islanders fans were very excited about Jason Gregoire, but because of news that broke two days ago that excitement is fading. It was revealed that Gregoire decided to take advantage of a loop-hole in the CBA that has only been used once before (Blake Wheeler). That loop-hole in the Collective Bargaining Agreement is as follows; any player who does not remain a college player through the graduation of his applicable class (in this case, 2012), must submit a letter stating his intention to turn professional. Upon submission of that letter, the drafting club shall have 30 days to sign the player. If the player and team cannot reach an agreement within that 30 day period, the player becomes a free agent. Gregoire submitted his letter of intention to turn professional on May 18 which means on June 17th, if the Islanders haven't signed him, he will become an Unrestricted Free Agent. Despite the fact that the Islanders still have a chance at signing him, I get the feeling he will not come to Long Island and will look for the biggest pay-day possible from teams in Free Agency.

Season Grade (A+ to F-): B+
He had a very strong Junior year, and put up very impressive stats despite being hampered by injuries and missing a handful of games through the season. His play will translate to the NHL game well, and hopefully it'll happen with the Islanders.
