Grabner Extended By The NY Isles To A 5 Year Deal
As broken by himself through Twitter, Michael Grabner had re-signed with the Islanders. Although it was expected, most thought it would be a short-term contract but to most fans delight it was anything other than that. The deal is a long one at 5 years, which is the most years Garth Snow has given a player since the off-season of 2008 when he signed Mark Streit to a 5-year contract. Also, Grabner now has the 2nd most years left on his contract of all Islanders behind Ricky DP. The money will be distributed as so; 1st year (11/12) $1 million, 2nd year (12/13) $2 million, 3rd year (13/14) $3 million, 4th year (14/15) $4 million, 5th year (15/16) $5 million. Whether done on purpose or not, each year's amount of millions he makes coincides with whatever year of the deal he is on at that point. The deal's cap-hit for all five years equals $3 million flat and in my opinion is quite the steal. Despite the critics (aka. Damien Cox) saying they think this year was a fluke, no one can deny that Grabner was impressive this season and there is no reason why it won't carry over. This season "Grabby" scored an impressive 34 goals. There were only 3 other players that ended the year with exactly those many goals, Patrick Sharp, Bobby Ryan, and Danny Briere. Their cap-hits are $3.9M, $5.1M, and $6.5M respectively, which shows that Grabner's cap-hit is less, significantly in some cases, than players with similar totals. I am very happy with this deal and am excited to watch Grabner speed through opponents for the next 5 years.
