Short-Term Status:
Next season will be very important in Ullstrom's development which thus far has been impressive. He will be getting top-six minutes with Bridgeport and although he will probably spend most of the season in the AHL, I would not be surprised if he got a few call-ups through-out the year.Long-Term Status:
I like David Ullstrom and I think he will become an NHL player, the only question is in what capacity? In my opinion, he will probably end up being a good 3rd liner that provides a nice secondary scoring option. After this upcoming season, it will be easier to predict where his upside really is.

Review:
David Ullstrom's first season in North America should be considered a success. The previous year, Ullstrom played in the Swedish Elite League and put up decent numbers for a player his age, so there were expectations coming into the season and I believe he met them. He put up the fourth most points of anyone on the Sound Tigers with 41 and played in a lot of different situations. What was very surprising to me was his speed. For a 6'3 guy, he skates incredibly well and is very quick with and without the puck on his stick. His speed, which was shown at the Islanders prospect scrimmage fastest skater event when he won the event relatively easily, is a big asset of his which complements his overall game well. His release of his shot is very good and quick, more than a few times it helped him sneak a few past the goalie. His vision is above-average and he is able to make some nice passes in the offensive zone. His two-way play is what makes him, in my opinion, a likely candidate to play on the Islanders 3rd line sometime in the future. Although he displayed some very nice skills throughout the season, he did struggle with consistency. There would be stretches where he would put up 2-3 points every game for a week and then on the flip side, he would have stretches where he would go two weeks without a point. Being a rookie and in his first season in North America, I think it's ok to give him a little bit of a pass on that, but like I said previously, next season is very important for him and he must give a consistent, effective effort all year long. Season Grade (A+ to F-): B
He finished up the year with a good amount of points in his AHL rookie season and had some very impressive moments throughout it. Unfortunately he was very inconsistent at various points in the season. Had he played his absolute best all season long he would have had even more points and a much better plus/minus rating than he had (-11). Despite that inconsistency, it was a good rookie year for the 22 year old, Ullstrom.
