Short-Term Status: 

I don't think he will be re-signed which means he will become a Free Agent.

Long-Term Status:

He will not become an NHL player, he just doesn't have the tools needed. Even if by some small chance he does turn his career around, it will not be with the Islanders

Contract Status:

He has no NHL contract as of May 17, 2011

Review: 

After a very disappointing collegiate career at UND, he decided to leave and head to the WHL. After a slow start, he played a solid all-around season, but as a 20 year old he should have done a lot better than that. People were very excited to have Jonathan Toews' little brother in the system, but unfortunately it doesn't look like he will turn out to be half the player his brother is. I don't expect David Toews to receive a contract offer from the Islanders which means in all likely hood, he will be signing in Europe or in the lower levels of North American pro hockey. 

Season Grade (A+ to F-): D

As a 20 year old overager in the WHL, I expected him to get AT LEAST a point per game, but he was 12 points off of that pace. He looked average in a league he should have been destroying at his age.
