Matt Martin Turning Into Terrific Bottom 6 Forward

Although Matt Martin may be known by some only for his retribution he put on Max Talbot, he is turning into a terrific bottom 6 forward. Martin, who is personally one of my favorite players, is one of the best big time hitters in the entire NHL at only 21 years old. The kid may not be putting up a huge amount of points but one of the most astonishing stats in all of the NHL this year is he is currently 5th in the NHL in hits with 203, yet he only played 46 games. The 46 games are the lowest amount of games played out of anyone in the top 10 NHL hitters by 12 games. So just by pure estimation, had he played the same amount as other top NHL hitters, he would probably be leading the NHL in hits by a decent amount. In his rookie year, it seems he has been given a full time 4th line role which gives him very little opportunity to get any points which might explain the fact that he only has 7. But its very important to take a look at what he has put up in the lower leagues. In 2008-09, with the Sarnia Sting he put up 65 points in 61 games which included 35 goals. Then in 2009-10, during his rookie season in the AHL, he put up 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points. This year in his 7 game stint with Bridgeport of the AHL he put up 3 points. Looking at his past stats and how he has played thus far this season, its obvious that he has the potential to put up a decent amount of points in the NHL. He has good vision on the ice that he has not been able to display but hopefully as he matures he will be given more responsibility which would enable him to fulfill his potential. In the offensive zone he also has shown that he can be an asset in front of the net, by being a big body in front of the goalie on the Power Play. Last year in his 5 game stint with the Isles he put up 2 assists on the PP by standing in front on the net. The different dimensions that he brings to the game, makes him a very useful and versatile member of the team. The fact that he is willing to do anything for the team makes him a real candidate down the road to possibly get an Assistant Captain position. The Islanders General Manager, Garth Snow, said earlier in the year that Martin is the "epitome of what an Islander should be". The point potential, huge hits, and his pride of being an Islander signifies that he will be on Long Island for a long time.
