Brian Burke, the Toronto Maple Leafs GM, is supposedly on the verge of acquiring a defenseman. Talking to James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail, Burke said "We’re trying to add by tomorrow if we can" which means we should be expecting some news within 24 hours.
Also on the same front, IncarceratedBob, a well known news breaker in the Twitter world, released this update:

So according to Incarcerated Bob, this will not be just a minor plug trade to try and run out the season. It will be a difference maker, and a defenseman that will be a major piece of the Toronto Maple Leafs puzzle.
