Senators Acquire Another Draft Pick

To Senators:
Ryan Potulny
2nd-Round Draft Pick in 2011

To Blackhawks:
Chris Campoli
Conditional 7th-Round Draft Pick in 2011

Review:
As we all know, or at least should know...the Senators spent this deadline trading any player that didn't fit in their long term plans, for draft picks. This is just another one of those type of moves. The Blackhawks were in need of another bottom-pairing defenseman because of the season ending injury to Jordan Hendry so they went out and took a chance on a puck mover in Chris Campoli. Campoli once was a promising defenseman with the NY Islanders but he was unhappy and requested a trade, Garth Snow moved him to the Senators for a 1st round draft pick and his career has plummeted since. Most indications are that Campoli will be used as purely a short term solution for this Blackhawks blue-line. The Senators have to be happy with this deal as they get a 2nd round draft pick and a decent bottom 6 forward in Potulny for Campoli, who Bryan Murray revealed following the trade, was not going to be qualified as a RFA in the off-season which would have let him walk as an unrestricted free agent. So in the Senators mind they basically got a 2nd round pick and Potulny for nothing but a CONDITIONAL 7th round pick that is only given up if the Sens decide to re-sign Potulny. Its very good asset management by Bryan Murray, who has been under a lot of scrutiny as of late.

Winner Short-Term: Senators, just looking at how it helps them today they get a solid bottom 6 forward for a defenseman they had no use for.

Winner Long-Term: Big win by the Senators, its essentially a free 2nd round draft pick in Bryan Murray's mind so that has to be applauded.
