Isles Sign Tomas Marcinko To A 1-Year Extension
The Islanders have re-signed twenty-three year old Center, Tomas Marcinko to a one-year contract. This was a bit surprising to me as I was almost positive that the Isles would not be retaining him. He has been pretty underwhelming offensively and took a role as a defensive-type center, but was sub-par in that position as well. I look at this signing as a last chance type deal. If he doesn't prove himself in this one-year, two-way, contract then his time with the Isles will be done. This is what I wrote on his season review:
"After having decent numbers in the OHL in 06-07 and 07-08, he has been an absolute bust once he moved up to the next level. He has not put up more than 11 points in any of his three season in the AHL. He took a role as a more defensive orientated bottom-six center for the Tigers but still had an abysmal plus/minus this season with a minus-20. He has been decent on the PK in Bridgeport, but his lack of speed has become more and more problematic. Along with his lack of speed, his hockey sense is just non-exsistent and in my opinion for a player to be defensively strong at the higher levels they NEED the defensive awareness and hockey sense to assist them in reading the opposing offense. This season proved to me that Marcinko really does not have an NHL future and his upside is probably where is right now; a bottom-six AHL forward. I would not be surprised to see him sign in Europe during the off-season as I don't believe he will be approached by any NHL teams."
