Mike Richards Heading To The Kings
To Philadelphia:
Brayden Schenn
Wayne Simmonds
2012 2nd rounder
To Los Angelas:
Mike Richards
Review:
This was without a doubt one of the most surprising deals made within the past year. Mike Richards was thought to be the face of this Philadelphia team and moving him was highly unexpected, especially considering they traded Carter just a few minutes before. It also indicates that those rumors that were running rampant earlier this season that there were problems in the locker room, were all true. I just find it amazing that they traded their captain and star for young kids. At 26 years old and with 9 years left on his contract, the Kings may have found another star to add to their "untouchable" list. He will provide an incredible 1-2 combo with Kopitar as the 1st and 2nd line Centers. Richards has a two-way ability mixed with an impressive offensive game which makes him absolutely lethal on both sides of the puck. Now despite the fact that the Flyers lost an incredible "star status" player, they did get some quality assets in return for him. Brayden Schenn is perhaps one of the best prospects in all of hockey, and should be NHL ready very soon. His upside is the topic of many arguments because people can't seem to agree on what he will ultimately end up being. I personally believe he is going to be a hell of a player, but his playing style will take a few years to translate fully to the NHL, so he probably won't reach his full upside for a little while. Along with Schenn, they received Wayne Simmonds, who is an incredible grinder. He forechecks better than anyone in the league and has solid offensive upside. Flyer fans will love Simmonds and within the first week of the season he will be a fan favorite. The draft pick is for next year, but its pretty high in the 2nd round. I wouldn't be surprised if it was traded for an established NHL'er between now and the middle of next season. The Flyers always seem eager to move draft picks for NHL veterans or NHL ready players. This deal is huge and is, quite possibly, the biggest deal we will see this off-season
Short-Term Winner: Kings
Long-Term Winner: Tied
